The Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure‐track assistant or associate professor position in a sociocultural subdiscipline with a specialization related to social justice, ethics, and inclusion as they relate to the subject of sport, physical activity, or exercise with appointment to begin August 2022.

Position

CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, laboratories, research studies, and individually mentored projects. Faculty teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the teaching of core and upper-division courses in the sociocultural disciplines, and potentially the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. Courses that this person will teach include undergraduate and graduate courses in Philosophy of Sport and the History of Sport, as well as the possibility of Sport Sociology, Sport and Film, Gender and Sexuality in Sport, and the Sociocultural Study of the Olympic Games, or related coursework. This person will also be responsible for producing scholarship / creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure, and for supervising student theses/projects/comprehensive exams as well as potentially contributing to the ongoing work for the Centers and Institutes in the College of Health and Human Development. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.

The Kinesiology Department at California State University, Fullerton is nationally renowned for its excellence in sociocultural areas of kinesiology. The department supports two sociocultural courses as part of its core curriculum for kinesiology majors and offers an additional four undergraduate and two graduate courses on sociocultural topics within kinesiology. In addition, the department houses the Center for Sociocultural Sport and Olympic Research, which hosts an annual conference, awards the Robert K. Barney Graduate Student Essay Award, and publishes the peer-reviewed Journal of Olympic Studies. Faculty in this area at CSUF are nationally and internationally recognized for their research expertise with a strong track record of collaboration and support. Additionally, the College of Health and Human Development supports centers that consider aspects of physical activity and exercise as topics for social justice, ethics, and inclusion research, including the Center for Healthy Neighborhoods, the Center for the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles and Obesity Prevention, and the Center for Successful Aging.

Required Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or relevant subdiscipline with a focus on kinesiology subject matter, which may include subdisciplines such as philosophy, history, sociology, cultural studies and similar subdisciplines with a focus on sport, physical activity, or exercise.
  • Teaching experience (as lead instructor or teaching assistant) in courses similar to the existing sociocultural courses currently offered by the department (see above) and a commitment to teaching topics that consider issues of access, inclusion, or appreciation for historically underrepresented groups in sport or physical activity. Such topics may include issues stemming from gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, disability, religion, and social class as well as larger ethical and historical issues that relate to human rights, health disparities, power, privilege, or oppression.
  • A strong record of, or potential for, scholarly excellence focusing on issues of social justice, ethics, or inclusion as they relate to sport, physical activity, or kinesiology.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching of a very diverse student population, including first‐generation college students.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated, or potential for, success teaching diverse student populations.
  • Success or promise in obtaining clearly identified extramural funding for research.
  • Leadership in professional organizations and editorial roles with academic journals.
  • The potential to collaborate with existing Centers and Institutes at CSUF or establish community partnerships.
