Open Rank: Assistant/Associate/Full Professor

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University invites applications for tenure track positions in the field of clean, sustainable energy, broadly defined. One primary appointment will be in Chemistry and Chemical Biology and one primary appointment will be in Chemical Engineering with joint appointments in other departments across the University. Additional joint appointments may be primarily in the College of Engineering. Candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams across the University and will complement existing strengths.

Fields that may be relevant include materials chemistry, photochemistry, synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry and bioengineering. These positions will build on already significant expertise towards university leadership in this area including industry connections and products. We are seeking new approaches for energy storage and conversion, climate and environmental modeling, water treatment, environmental sensing and monitoring, and renewable and sustainable consumer products are essential for environmental protection and improvement. The candidate would advance research related to environmental sustainability in chemistry.

Applications are invited for multiple positions at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) beginning in academic year 2022-2023. Exceptional senior candidates will be considered for appointment at higher ranks.

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (“CCB”) (https://cos.northeastern.edu/chemistry-chemical-biology/) includes 29 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 30% of whom are women; 11 full-time teaching faculty; three research faculty; and nine faculty with affiliated appointments. CCB was recognized as the most gender diverse faculty among the top 50 US Chemistry Departments in 2019. CCB enrolls approximately 150 undergraduate majors; 27 M.S. and PlusOne (BS/MS) students; and 80 Ph.D. students. Under new leadership, the College of Science, and CCB are in a vibrant expansion phase.

The Department of Chemical Engineering (https://che.northeastern.edu) includes 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 40% of whom are women; 4 full-time teaching faculty; and thirteen faculty with affiliated appointments. Chemical engineering enrolls approximately 475 undergraduate majors; 40 M.S. and PlusOne (BS/MS) students; and 70 Ph.D. students. Experiential education is a hallmark of our programs, with nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate students completing co-ops in the past year and a commitment to undergraduate research.

Northeastern is home to the Coastal Sustainability Institute https://www.northeastern.edu/csi/, the Global Resilience Institute https://globalresilience.northeastern.edu/, the Barnett Institute for Chemical and Biological Analysis https://cos.northeastern.edu/barnett/, the Institute for Chemical Imaging of Living Systems https://cils.northeastern.edu/, and the Northeastern University Center for Renewable Energy Technology https://northeastern.edu/nucret, providing a rich multidisciplinary intellectual environment.

Our tenure and promotion process values collaborative research and teamwork. Hires will be mentored for success, with mentoring teams and group guidance. In addition, a strong and effective faculty development strategy is part of the Northeastern institutional mission. The ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development office works in conjunction with the Office of Research Development (ORD), the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI), the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR), and University Decision Support (UDS) to provide programs and trainings to further develop and support a thriving faculty.

In the Northeastern University Colleges of Science and Engineering, we embrace a culture of respect, where each person is valued for their contribution and is treated fairly. We oppose all forms of racism. We support a culture that does not tolerate any form of discrimination and where each person may belong. As a community, we strive to have a diverse membership, one where each person is trained and mentored to promote their success.

Responsibilities:
Candidates are expected to develop vigorous research programs cross cutting the fields of chemistry, chemical biology, environmental science, chemical and environmental engineering, and/or materials science. Faculty members at Northeastern are expected to develop independent research programs that attract external funding; teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate level; supervise students and postdocs in their area of research; and participate in service to the department, university, and discipline.
