The Department of Film and Media Arts in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University seeks a highly accomplished, dynamic, and visionary leader to serve as its Chair beginning Fall, 2022. The future chair will possess a strong record of scholarship and interdisciplinary creative activity in film and media arts. A record of excellence in teaching and experience developing curriculum for undergraduate majors, minors, and graduate students is desirable. This individual should have experience overseeing departmental administrative procedures and be committed to advocacy and shared governance. The Chair’s responsibilities include hiring/supervising staff and faculty, supporting faculty through the promotion and tenure process, resource management, recruitment, fundraising, and community engagement. Evidence of a commitment to working collegially with individuals from diverse backgrounds is required.

Qualifications
  • MFA or other related terminal degree or equivalent current experience in the profession at the highest level of accomplishment.
  • Ability to be tenured at the associate or full professor level as demonstrated by a proven record of high-quality creative activity, scholarship, and/or professional accomplishment.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide administrative, fiscal, and fundraising leadership.
  • Established relationships with critical constituencies and entities (professional/academic organizations, film makers, arts organizations, industry leaders, etc.).
  • Ability to oversee the processes of curriculum design, development, assessment and certification, including meeting the expectations of The National Association of Schools of Art and Design ( NASAD ), the New York State Education Department ( NYSED ) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education ( MSCHE ).
  • Familiarity with standard technology used in teaching and administrative procedures, as well as various forms of social media.
  • Appropriate regional, national, and international breadth and depth of knowledge of academic programs in film and media arts.
  • Engagement with and knowledge of contemporary art.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Evidence of a commitment to working collegially with individuals from diverse backgrounds is required.

Responsibilities
Responsible, in consultation with faculty and with assistance of Associate Chairs, Program Coordinators and faculty committees, for the creative and academic leadership of the Department of Film and Media Arts, and for communicating to the Dean the educational and administrative matters in the department.

These responsibilities include:
Departmental curricula: Oversees the organization and development of courses and curriculum, including development of the academic requirements for each degree program offered; approves scheduling and supervision of course loads and curricular offerings in the unit.

Student welfare and advisement: In consultation with the director of academic and career services, ensure that adequate academic advising takes place, and that students have available to them appropriate avenues for addressing their concerns.

Personnel functions: Recruits, supervises, and evaluates department personnel, including coordination of recruiting, interviewing, and recommending the employment of faculty to the Dean; assigns and recommends faculty loads where appropriate; recommends Leaves of Absence, faculty awards, etc.

Tenure and promotion: Makes recommendations to the Dean and appropriate College governing bodies and committees on matters regarding promotion, tenure, and other faculty matters subject to College and University rules.

Budget : Oversees the development and management of departmental budgets, including allocation of resources and operational budgets in support of teaching, creative, and scholarly activity; oversees allocation, use, and maintenance of equipment and space assigned to the Department; makes recommendations concerning faculty and staff salaries.

Program Review: Reviews School policies, programs, and procedures and recommends appropriate actions.

Effective Communication: Utilizes effective communication skills with students, faculty, administration, and other constituencies.

Teaching: Determined in consultation with the Dean.
