Stetson University, College of Arts and Sciences

Position: Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Studies

Stetson University seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Studies. This full-time, nine-month position for the 2022-23 academic year is for a dynamic candidate with enthusiasm for teaching a variety of undergraduate classes within Environmental Science and Studies.  Depending on departmental need and administrative approval, the position may be extended beyond one year. Candidates with a specialization related to urban environments will be given preference, especially if GIS is incorporated into their work.

Qualifications:

This position requires a Ph.D. (or terminal degree) awarded in a sustainability-related field by August 2022 and demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates with a variety of effective methodologies. Specializations in one or more of the following areas will be given preference: Urban Sustainability and Resilience, Urban Planning and Design, Sustainable Food Systems, Urban Ecology, Regenerative Landscapes, Environmental Justice and Geographic Information Systems. The committee will prioritize candidates with interest in teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds. We seek a colleague who is actively engaged in work that could allow for the inclusion of undergraduate student collaborators and who is eager to contribute to a liberal arts-based program and a broader community of undergraduates. We encourage candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and/or experience in diverse learning environments to apply.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to teach four courses per semester, or the equivalent thereof. These courses will include (1) one of the courses in our introductory environmental science and studies sequence, (2) a course/courses in the candidate’s area of expertise (e.g. Urban Sustainability and Resilience) that fulfill(s) major requirements, and (3) Geographic Information Systems and Science. Depending on departmental need, teaching assignments may also include courses for the University’s General Education Curriculum and minor in Sustainable Food Systems. The ability to mentor undergraduate research, though not required, is desirable.

The Program:

The position will be housed in the Department of Environmental Science and Studies. Depending on the successful candidate’s area of expertise, there may also be opportunities to contribute to the Sustainable Food Systems Program. Our focus is exclusively on undergraduate students who desire rigorous and interdisciplinary training within the context of a liberal arts education. Exciting developments in the near future for Environmental Science and Studies include construction of the new Cici and Hyatt Brown Hall for Health and Innovation. Our department offers two majors, including a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. Many students in our program carry a minor in Sustainable Food Systems.

College of Arts and Sciences:

Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (http://www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts.  With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University.  A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 140 full-time teacher-scholars.  The College offers 31 undergraduate majors and 34 undergraduate minors; six graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing.  Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, giving students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship.  Our academic programs are shaped by the values of social justice and civic responsibility.  All of our courses and programs of study promote engaged learning, whereby students create connections between the classroom or lab and the local, regional, and global community.  The academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences prepare students to live significant lives, to interact with and positively affect the world around them.

The University:

Founded in 1883, Stetson University (http://www.stetson.edu) is a private, selective university comprised of a rich array of liberal arts and professional academic programs.
