The vast collections at the Library of Congress support scholarship in almost any imaginable research endeavor. The main scholarly center at the Library is the John W. Kluge Center, which supports scholars at different stages of their careers who require the use of Library collections in their study of the “human sciences” – the humanities, social sciences, and related fields.

The Director of the Kluge Center has the unique opportunity in the federal government to lead the selection process for scholars, as well as plan events and a social media strategy to bring specialized research to a wider audience of Members of Congress, their staffs, other policymakers, and the interested public. The Kluge Center has been a leading contributor to conversations on the challenges facing democracy in the 21st Century. The Center also recommends to the Librarian of Congress candidates for the prestigious Kluge Prize.

The Library seeks an experienced leader who is dedicated to promoting research that bridges the gap between academic work and the challenges facing democracy. The ideal candidate understands the academic world and has experience managing a scholarly program. S/he must be comfortable communicating in public settings as well as to Congress and other policymakers. The Kluge Center Director works with staff throughout the Library in implementing the program. S/he also must interact effectively across academic disciplines, as well as establish relationships with a wide range of cultural institutions.
