Within Emerson College's Media Technologies and Production (MTP) department resides the engineering staff. The Associate Director of Broadcast Engineering serves the students, faculty, and staff of Emerson College by maintaining and providing support services to the College's media production equipment and facilities. The mission of the engineering department is to ensure that MTP managed equipment and facilities are in good working order and to provide high-quality technical services in support of curricular projects. The Associate Director, Broadcast Engineering shares responsibility for the successful operation, staffing, and strategic vision of the engineering department.

Purpose of Position: The Associate Director, Broadcast Engineering is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of Emerson College's broadcast and other media production facilities and their associated equipment and systems. The Associate Director is able to diagnose and solve operational and technical problems and escalate to appropriate vendors as required. Additionally, the Associate Director supervises three full-time employees responsible for repair and maintenance of equipment used both within technical facilities and in the field. The Associate Director, Broadcast Engineering partners with the Design and Integration Manager to support facility upgrades and equipment installations in both production and post production facilities.

Your Key Responsibilities:
  • Directly manage the equipment maintenance and repair shop, including three full-time employees (Senior Electronic Maintenance Technician, Film Equipment Maintenance Technician, Electronic Maintenance and Integration Technician), to minimize equipment downtime and promptly return equipment to service. Using metrics, oversee the repair process, to ensure that all damaged equipment is fixed or replaced in a timely and financially responsible manner.
  • Set priorities for equipment repair and expedite service for high demand items
  • Coordinate staff response for on-site service calls including troubleshooting, equipment replacement, and preventative maintenance
  • Provide direct, hands-on engineering support to three television studios, as well as the Emerson Channel Sports control room and mobile production solutions, including the development and refinement of REMI workflows at Rotch Field and other Emerson Athletics venues. Direct support includes: equipment installation, cable fabrication, design and documentation, software configuration, and vendor support calls
  • Coordinate and administer annual equipment software and firmware upgrades within MTP production facilities
  • Consult and collaborate with senior MTP management to develop strategic initiatives that improve and enhance operations and provide solutions to pedagogical challenges by coordinating and providing technical review of planned equipment purchases to ensure compatibility with existing systems, as well as reliability and repairability of specified equipment. Workflow enhancement proposals to be informed by the associate director's own observations, industry trends as well as user and staff feedback
  • Review existing equipment inventory, specifically broadcast and field equipment, for age, repair history, serviceability and technological capabilities to recommend lifecycle replacements to area managers and MTP senior management
  • Develop and implement internal integration plans for new equipment acquisitions within MTP production facilities
  • Oversee management of MTP's equipment inventory. Hire, train and supervise a student staff to receive all new equipment purchases, assign asset tags, update equipment inventory database, and distribute equipment to facility managers. Coordinate disposal of surplus and end of life equipment and ensure updated inventory data entry


Your Other Responsibilities:
  • In coordination with the Director, MTP Technical Operations, build, monitor, and update the annual engineering repair budget. As needed, coordinate and execute the purchase of repair supplies and generate purchase orders for equipment repair
  • Manage and maintain local and cloud-based technical and administrative documentation
  • As needed, provide on-site engineering support to Emerson Productions remote productions. Monitor and implement live streaming best practices for live event production, including use of closed captioning
  • In collaboration with IT Infrastructure, oversee MTP fiber optic infrastructure
  • Stay current with media production equipment and industry trends by attending local vendor presentations and demonstrations, industry conference wrap-ups, on-site vendor demonstrations, and reading industry literature in order to better inform upcoming technology requests and purchases, as well as better support facility managers and staff
  • All other duties as assigned


Your Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of experience as a broadcast or video engineer within a television station, mobile production truck, studio/production house or higher education media production facility
  • 5+ years experience in design, integration and maintenance of production and post production facilities such as recording studios, radio stations, tv stations and post production houses
  • 5+ years experience managing full time staff
  • Ability to maintain professional composure during time sensitive troubleshooting
  • Expert understanding of audio and video signal measurement and standards
  • Expert understanding of control room production technologies and process
  • Strong understanding of computer networking
  • Knowledge of HD/UHD/HDR monitor displays and color calibration standards (ISF, Calman, Rec 709, DCI, BT-2020).
  • Advanced understanding of codecs and post production
  • Ability to read, produce, and maintain system and wiring documentation with AutoCAD/Vizio/etc.
  • Ability to read schematics and signal flow charts
  • Ability to lead and assist with projects
  • Service excellence orientation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must know how to fabricate and repair common cables and connectors (BNC, XLR, RJ45, etc.)
  • Proficient with electronics repair equipment such as soldering irons, DMM, analyzers and power tools
  • Must be responsible, detail-oriented and improvise quick solutions
  • High to expert level troubleshooting skills and testing methodology
  • Excellent organizational skills including multitasking and attention to details
  • Self-starter, work independently under minimum supervision
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required

    • Studio and Field Lighting,
    • HDR production and post production workflows
  • Project management certification
  • Fluency in Google Workspace
  • Knowledge of Webcheckout and its ticketing system
  • HigherEd procurement systems (preferably Workday)
  • Work experience in higher education


Work Environment:
  • Varied work environments (office, equipment/machine room, maintenance shop)
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods
  • Ability to work in difficult physical positions or bodily contortions
  • Duties include moving and lifting of objects that are 50 lb. or less
  • Use of chemicals common to electronic equipment maintenance and repair (epoxies, lubricants, solvents, soldering flux, etc.)
