Position Purpose: The Instructional Services Librarian supports learning by providing student centered instruction and reference services. This position is responsible for the design and implementation of the instructional program, with an emphasis on first year general education courses and upper division research courses in all schools. The Instructional Services Librarian develops and coordinates other formal and informal research instruction initiatives in collaboration with the director and reference staff. The Instructional Services Librarian is a member of the Phillips Library’s reference team, providing general reference and research assistance to all patrons and participating in a rotating reference schedule that includes evenings and some weekends.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • Create scaffolded information literacy instruction in alignment with the university curriculum.
  • Develop strong working relationships with faculty.
  • Proven effectiveness in delivering information literacy instruction in face to face and online classrooms.
  • Create tutorials to aid students in completing library research.
  • Provides student-centered reference services.
  • May assist with collection development in assigned subject areas.


  • Essential Job Requirements:

    Education:
    • ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science.
    Experience:
    • Experience in planning and executing information literacy instruction to library users in an academic library setting or relevant course work required.
    • Reference experience or relevant coursework required.
    Skills:
    • Initiative to experiment and deliver new instructional services in the library.
    • A collaborative disposition. Willingness to work with library colleagues in a rapidly changing information environment. Ability to work collaboratively with other campus departments and individuals.
    • Dedication to teamwork. We are a small department where each person contributes unique talents to the whole. Flexibility and acceptance of change are necessary.
    • Communicates effectively to student patrons, co-workers, and the campus community both orally and in writing.
    • Versatile and imaginative librarian who can develop and deliver appropriate information literacy instruction with a keen awareness of new technologies.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Using a podium to deliver instruction; sitting or standing at a desk to assist students; moving about campus; lifting books and pushing book carts; extensive use of computers and other technology.
