St Andrews is Scotland’s oldest university and (if you read the right league table*), the best university in the United Kingdom. St Andrews is a diverse community of 10,000 students and 2500 staff, a melting pot of 140 nationalities which accounts for over half the population of the town.

St Andrews’ USP is the excellence of its staff and the quality of research-led teaching. It has consistently inhabited the very upper reaches of the National Student Survey.

Staff choose St Andrews for its unswerving loyalty to a culture that prizes and protects the highest standards of research and teaching. Beyond the books, quality of life feeds on sea and sky, cobbled streets, culture, and a collision of world views which make this compressed community one of the most intellectually stimulating in Europe. St Andrews is all about its people, their ideas, and their experience.

Under the leadership of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Mapstone, St Andrews has re-affirmed an ambition to be a beacon of inclusivity and to ensure that equality and diversity are at the heart of the St Andrews experience and inform all that we do. This is encapsulated in ‘Diverse St Andrews’, one of four distinct strategic pillars in our University’s Strategy 2018-23. We are seeking a Vice-Principal People and Diversity in order to deliver on these ambitions and to help shape the institution’s future.

Reporting directly to the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, and as a member of the senior management team, this new position will provide strategic leadership to the delivery of our EDI, human resources, organisational development, and mediation services. You will play a critical role in the delivery of the University’s People Strategy, which underpins our ‘Diverse St Andrews’ strategic theme, working closely with the University’s Head of EDI and the Director of HR and their teams. You will help drive an approach that empowers our whole community, students and staff, to embrace a culture shift.

The successful individual will be an inspirational leader and strategic thinker, with high levels of emotional intelligence and a collaborative approach. They will have proven leadership experience and a track record of driving positive cultural change within complex stakeholder environments. An understanding of the University environment is desirable; as are familiarity with HR and Organisational Development practices, together with a demonstrable knowledge and experience of good practice relating to equality, diversity, and inclusivity. This full-time post is envisaged as an excellent opportunity for a career academic, or a professional with strategic HR experience and a track record of embedding diversity in complex organisations.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian, Minority or Ethnic (BAME) communities, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in senior posts at the University.

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our multiple accreditations and awards, as listed on: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/
