Summary of position:
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in Counseling and Leadership, the Director for School Counseling serves as the lead for our School Counseling (SC) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs. This position also teaches counseling courses in our SOE Graduate Studies in Education (GSE) counseling programs, and supervises practicum and internship students in the School Counseling Program.

OPPORTUNITIES OF THE POSITION:

  • Direct Graduate Studies in Education School Counseling and Social Emotional Learning programs
    • Advocate for resources, including staffing, to meet SC and SEL programming needs;
    • Coordinate on-boarding of new SC and SEL faculty, including adjunct faculty;
    • Oversee course offerings, faculty course assignments, course syllabi, and textbook selections for SC and SEL courses;
    • Coordinate and supervise practicum and internship students in the SC program, including mentoring graduate students, collecting state-required documents, and confirming fingerprinting;
    • Monitor academic progress of students, including advising and placement;
    • Develop student growth plans as needed;
    • Serve on SC thesis committees;
    • Serve as a community liaison, building relationships with school partners;
    • Serve on the Professional Educator Advisory Board (PEAB), and SOE counseling team;
    • Assist with student recruitment for the SC and SEL programs;
    • Serve on the SC admissions committee;
    • Manage budgets for SC and SEL programs.
  • Engage actively in professional opportunities related to SC and SEL at the local, state, and national levels
    • Attend state meetings related to SC and SEL programs;
    • Participate in GSE and School of Education (SOE) meetings and activities as appropriate;
    • Actively engage in appropriate professional and scholarly activities, including research and presentations, furthering the fields of SC and SEL;
    • Participate in state and national professional associations and conferences as appropriate.
  • Teach in GSE School Counseling and Social Emotional Learning program
    • The SOE Director of SC & SEL will teach a portfolio of courses in the SOE, determined by expertise and experience.
  • Coordinate Accreditation Processes and Requirements for School Counseling & Social Emotional Learning programs
    • Ensure that the SC program complies and is aligned with national standards (CACREP and MPCAC);
    • Ensure that the SC and SEL programs comply with state Professional Education Standards Board requirements;
    • Oversee the development and implementation of SC and SEL assessment plans, providing needed data reports to PESB and Whitworth for accreditation reporting.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

  • Earned doctorate in school counseling, psychology or closely related field;
  • State ESA certification or eligibility;
  • A minimum of three years (3) of higher education experience;
  • A minimum of three years (3) of school counseling or clinical experience;
  • Experience providing clinical supervision;
  • Demonstrated growth in cultural competence, awareness of societal and structural inequities and proven experience in effectively establishing relationships and positive communications with students and other constituents across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, varying abilities, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, class or religious perspectives;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders, developing consensus toward common goals or policies;
  • A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning;
  • A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a comprehensive Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.

PREFERRED JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • College level teaching experience;
  • Knowledge of, and successful experience working with university graduate programs;
  • Familiarity with integration of technology in education;
  • Involvement and leadership in state and national professional organizations;
  • State or national accreditation experience;
  • Budget management experience at the unit or departmental level;
  • Experience with program and curricular design;
  • Strong analytical skills focused, in particular, upon program effectiveness, enrollment trends, and student assessments;
  • Strong problem-solving skills;
  • Clear organizational skills;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to support candidates, and communicate with constituencies;
  • Strong team player, with the ability to take initiative and operate independently.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D.) from an accredited college or university in a related field (i.e., School Counseling, Psychology, etc..).

Experience: Three (3) years or more of experience working in higher education as faculty and three (3) years of more of experience working in a School Counselor or clinical setting; demonstrated commitment to establishing positive working relationships with diverse groups of people and constituencies.

Licenses or Certifications:
None required, licensure as a school counselor preferred.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
