Faculty Position

Department of Nutrition Sciences

School of Health Professions

The University of Alabama at Birmingham

The Department of Nutrition Sciences (DNS) in the School of Health Professions (SHP) at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) announces a full-time 12-month non-tenure assistant/associate faculty position with teaching and administrative responsibilities in the area of food preparation and services. The faculty member is expected to teach nutrition education undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of food preparation and services, to oversee food services support to research projects in controlled feeding, and to serve as the primary manager of demonstration/educational and metabolic kitchens. The successful candidate will also provide academic and leadership support to existing and upcoming educational programs, in accordance with the mission of the department.

UAB has long been involved in nutrition, and our Dietetic Internship program was established in 1963. DNS has robust programs in obesity, diabetes, and cancer, and sponsors two NIH-funded research centers (Diabetes Research Center, Nutrition Obesity Research Center). SHP is one of the nation’s largest and most diverse schools of its type, with more than 20 programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels. SHP is one of six medically focused schools in a thriving academic health center. UAB is among the highest tiers of U.S. research institutions, and SHP is currently ranked in the top three for NIH funding for similar schools.

Candidates must have a graduate degree in nutrition and dietetics or a closely related field (master’s degree or above) and must have earned the registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) credential through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Candidates must also have three or more years of experience in a managerial or supervisory role in food services. Previous food service management experience in a high-volume room service operation is preferred, and knowledge of and experience with working with nutrition analysis software are highly desired. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience training and/or educating dietetic students (e.g. prior experience in preceptorship role). The salary is highly competitive, and fringe benefits include a retirement plan, health care benefits, and tuition assistance for the employee, spouse, and dependents.

Review of complete applications will begin on December 21, 2021. Applicants should submit a letter of application, a current curriculum vitae, description of research agenda, official transcripts, phone and email contact information for three references, and a statement of teaching philosophy.
