Brief Description of Duties

The Corporate and Foundation Relations Manager seeks to maximize dollars raised for priority needs of the University. Oversees, the acquisition of funding and partnership relationships through prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of corporate and foundation gifts to the University of the District of Columbia Foundation. The Incumbent is expected to maintain and manage a pipeline of at least 50 prospective institutional donors, advance at least 8-10 gift conversations at $50K+ per year, and engage faculty, senior staff and potential donors in quality engagement activity. Reports to the Director of Development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

Fundraising
  • Obtains an intimate knowledge of the University and faculty research interests and projects to determine the demand for corporate and foundations funds.
  • Develops and implements an annual plan for identifying, cultivating and soliciting prospects for corporate and foundation gifts.
  • Builds strong relationships with senior staff and faculty, often serving as proposal editor, budget developer or technical advisor on a solicitation or grant.
  • Seeks and manages all possible points of contact between institution and grant-maker; University leaders (President, deans, provost, faculty, trustee, board member and alumni);
  • Ensures that the strengths of the University intersect with a corporation or foundation’s strategy for present and future giving.
  • Works with the Director of Development to source CFP leads from current donors and volunteers and provides strategic information and guidance to assist in developing goals, plans, and procedures.
  • Works with Director of Development on stewardship and impact reporting.
  • Ensures that corporate and foundation gift records and reports are compiled and maintained in the Raisers Edge or similar fundraising CRM.
  • Collects, analyzes, and reports data; Prepares reports, presentations and proposals as required to internal and external team members and the leadership of the UDC Foundation.
  • Engages with the Raisers Edge or similar CRM database regularly to record and track donor cultivation and solicitation progress. A working proficiency in the Raisers Edge platform is expected within four to six months of hire.
  • Builds solid and lasting relationships with potential and existing corporate and foundation funders through active cultivation, stewardship and consistent outreach and engagement.
Grant Writing and Reporting
  • Manages all element of the proposal process including coordinating with the principal investigator to complete information required for proposal submission, writes and edits the proposal, reviews funding requirements and monitors compliance with submission deadlines.
  • Conducts prospect research to identify new funding sources and maintains a up to date database of grant opportunities and university program profiles.
  • Manages multiple grant submissions and follows-up to ensure all Departmental and University approvals are obtained allowing for timely proposal submission, including oversight and processing of Institutional Review Board (IRB) requests.
  • Develops, coordinates and/or conducts university wide training sessions on a variety of grantsmanship topics to encourage the faculty and staff to become proficient with proposal development, grant writing and electronic submission policies, reporting and post-award practices.
  • Prepares and files progress and annual reports to funding agencies as required by the donor.
  • Prepares and presents a monthly report of prospect pipeline and development activity to the Director of Development.
  • Works with Advancement team members to develop innovative recognition and engagement opportunities, materials and events for continuity and donor stewardship; utilizes technology to increase efficiency, productivity, and market reach; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Graduate and/or professional degree preferred.
  • Five years of progressive professional experience in corporate and foundation relations and grant writing.
  • Documented success in cultivating and soliciting corporate and foundation gifts or grants of $50,000 and above.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced goal-oriented team environment.
  • Should have experience with Microsoft Office software and demonstrate above average critical thinking, emotional intelligence, the ability to proactive, customer-focused, and to organize work in an environment that is dynamic and ever-changing.
  • Must have a passion for higher education, social justice and racial equity.
  • The proven ability to solicit and close financial agreements with donors is essential; and
  • Proficiency in the use of fundraising and prospect research software required (Raisers Edge, Research Point, Foundation Directory Online) or related software.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
