The College of Natural Sciences at South Dakota State University seeks applications for the Associate Dean of Research and Associate or Full Professor. This is a 12-month, full-time, benefit eligible, tenured position that is part administrative and part research faculty. The Associate Dean for Research will report to the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and meet regularly with College leadership.

The Associate Dean for Research will coordinate the College’s research development activities with the University by participating in the University Research Council and collaborating with the Vice President for Research and Economic Development.  Specific activities include working with the Dean’s office to create research financial predictions, assessment of research outputs and impacts as well as development of strategies for expanding research within the College. As a Faculty member, a successful applicant will also have the ability to establish an independent, nationally recognized research program which attracts extramural research funding, mentor and support undergraduate and graduate research projects and contribute to the overall mission of the Department, College and University.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position will be responsible for revising and implementing the College’s strategic plan for research.  In addition to leading a successful research program housed in one of the College’s departments, the Associate Dean for Research will work closely with faculty and department heads to provide leadership and mentoring aimed at expanding research output and sponsorship.  Recently, the College of Natural Sciences has expanded its NIH funded research portfolio in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms of inflammation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in discipline related to programs in any of the College of Natural Sciences four departments: Biology & Microbiology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geography & Geospatial Sciences, and Physics.
  • Evidence of scholarly, professional or creative achievement sufficient to qualify for tenure in any of the College of Natural Sciences four departments.
  • Experience in securing extramural funding from federal funding agencies.
  • An established research program with extramural funding.
  • Strong team leadership and mentoring skills in the area of research development.
  • Experience evaluating research proposals.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Sponsorship is not available for this position, must be authorized to work in the U.S.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated success in leading multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Familiarity with federal grant finance and compliance.
  • Familiarity with communicating with NIH and NSF program officers.
  • The ability to formulate long-term strategic plans and build consensus around the development and implementation of research centers and core facilities.
  • The ability to innovate, problem solve and efficiently remove administrative roadblocks.
