The University of Washington Department of Global Health, which bridges the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, seeks three, highly motivated, impact-driven, creative and collaborative individuals to join our faculty as assistant professors.  Our department values and honors excellence in research, teaching, mentoring, practice and service in order to achieve our mission: to improve health for all through research, education, training, and service; to understand and address the causes of disease and health inequities at multiple levels; and to collaborate with partners to develop and sustain locally-led, quality health systems, programs and policies

We are dedicated to hiring faculty who model the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, anti-racism and the de-colonialization of global health through their research, teaching, mentoring, practice, and service. We invite applications for three positions at the rank of Assistant Professor – Without Tenure for Reasons of Funding in the Department of Global Health as part of a multiple-hire process. Each position is full time (100% FTE) with a service period of 12 months (July 1 - June 30) and potential anticipated start date as early as Summer 2022. Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. Successful applicants for these positions will be expected to: 

  • Develop and maintain a high-impact research program including extramurally funded projects. We are particularly interested in continuing to expand faculty expertise, skills and experience in one or more of the following content and/or methodological areas: 

Priority Content Areas 

  • Climate change and health 
  • Global cardiovascular disease 
  • Global mental health 
  • Health systems strengthening  
  • Maternal, adolescent, child, and neonatal health  
  • Pandemic disease preparedness and response 
  • Infectious diseases, including HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and care 

Priority Methodological Areas 

  • Analysis of data for public health planning 
  • Implementation science 
  • Qualitative and/or mixed methods approaches to global health 
  • Randomized clinical trial design and implementation 
  • Technologies and tools for global health 
  • Provide educational leadership including classroom teaching and student mentoring in one or more of the areas listed above, with emphasis on utilizing innovative pedagogy and increasing equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and de-colonization;
  • Develop, maintain, and strengthen equitable and mutually beneficial partnerships with individuals and institutions locally and globally, with a particular focus on collaborations with communities experiencing or at risk for health disparities.  
  • Contribute to the department’s mission, community, and culture through active participation in departmental, school and university activities, and through robust collaboration with other faculty members, staff, students, partners and community stakeholders.

Qualifications

Applicants must have: 

  1. A medical or other doctoral degree, or foreign equivalent, in global health, public health, epidemiology, health economics or a related field; 
  2. A record of high-quality research and strong potential in teaching and mentorship; 
  3. A record of communicating and collaborating with a broad range of colleagues, students, partners, and other stakeholders, including as members of interdisciplinary teams;  
  4. A record of promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and/or de-colonization; and 
  5. Demonstrated work in global health, or demonstrated work in the US with marginalized/diverse populations, and documented plans for work in global health.

A cover letter describing what the applicant envisions as their future potential contributions to the Department of Global Health based on their past accomplishments, expertise, experiences and leadership.  The cover letter should also discuss why the applicant is interested in this position and how they will contribute to one or more of the priority content and/or methodological areas;
  2. A curriculum vitae detailing research, teaching, mentorship, publications, funding, practice, service, honors, and professional and leadership experiences; 
  3. A one-page statement describing commitment to, and experience in support of, increasing equity, diversity and inclusion in academic or other settings; 
  4. A one-page statement describing research accomplishments and research interests; and 
  5. A one-page statement describing interest, experience, and potential pedagogical approach to teaching and mentoring in global health.
