JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Mathematics at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Discrete Mathematics at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 15, 2022. The successful candidate will contribute to our campus community through teaching, research, professional activities and service. Our department seeks faculty with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and master's levels, including familiarity with evidence-based effective practices for teaching mathematics, as well as the potential to foster faculty-student collaborative research. In addition, we seek candidates with the potential to engage in a robust research agenda. Opportunities exist for collaboration within our campus community, and our proximity to a variety of other academic institutions offers the opportunity for cross-institution collaborations.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

Teaching responsibilities will include courses in mathematics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses required in the Mathematics major and courses serving Computer Science and related programs. Further responsibilities include student advising, mentoring student research at the undergraduate and graduate levels, developing a robust research agenda resulting in high-quality peer-reviewed publications, and providing leadership in course development and service that will advance scholarly excellence in mathematics and promote inclusive equity-based instruction.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Ph.D. in Mathematics in the area of discrete mathematics or a related field is required by time of appointment.
  • Experience teaching mathematics, as a teaching assistant, as an instructor of record or in another capacity, is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to teach a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses
  • Demonstrated interest in undergraduate and graduate education in mathematics
  • Research productivity and/or promise in the area of discrete mathematics or a related field
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience mentoring undergraduate student research
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective pedagogical practices in mathematics
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to develop new courses and curricula

Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Mathematics is one of nine departments within the College of Natural Sciences at CSUSB. We offer four bachelor degrees and a masters degree, as well as a minor in mathematics, a Certificate in Introductory Actuarial Mathematics, and a Subject Matter Authorization.

Our CSUSB mathematical community is known for being warm, welcoming, and supportive. Our classes are relatively small, especially at the upper division level. This helps promote great interaction between students and instructors and helps develop a strong sense of community. Most of our students are the first in their families to go to college. The majority of our students are from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM disciplines. CSUSB is nationally recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and we are one of the top mathematics departments in graduating Hispanic students.
