Job Description:

The Vice President of Academic Affairs serves as the college’s Campus Academic Officer. The incumbent provides educational and administrative leadership to achieve a high standard of excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, student success, and faculty and staff professional growth.  The Vice President of Academic Affairs provides the vision and overall guidance for educational planning, new program development, evaluation, and continuous improvement in an integrated instructional, academic support and student success setting. This position is responsible for development, interpretation and implementation of college educational policies and procedures consistent with State and Federal laws, rules and regulations, and Minnesota State policies and procedures. The Vice President of Academic Affairs provides college-wide leadership as a member of the President’s Executive Team, and in the absence of the President serves as the Campus Executive Officer.

Examples of Duties:
  1. Fulfill and oversee a regular and collaborative process for updating the college’s Academic Plan.
  2. Provide leadership and vision for the development of new programs and teaching innovation that meet the emerging needs of prospective students, businesses, public agencies, and community and non-profit organizations 
  3. Provide college-wide leadership to ensure that the goal of student academic success is the basis for college decision-making. 
  4. Use a business plan model to strategically develop, recommend and manage the Academic Affairs budget to most efficiently and effectively meet student academic needs. 
  5. Provide strategic management of the college’s Academic Affairs human resources.
  6. Contribute to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (Minnesota State) system, community, state, and nation through service, consultation, planning, and development activities to establish Minnesota State and the college as educational leaders. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Master’s degree
  • Type and Length of Experience: 
  • At least one year of experience in higher education academic leadership at the two-year college dean level or equivalent
  • Experience in a higher education institution that offers technical programs
  • Demonstrated understanding of the mission of a comprehensive community college
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and supporting innovative best practice learning experience
  • Experience with regional accreditation processes and use of program review Experience developing and administering budgets
  • Experience supervising faculty
  • Demonstrated success in promoting the values of faculty governance and participative management
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion of and sensitivity to diversity among students, faculty and staff

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: 
  • Doctorate degree
  •  Type and Length of Experience: 
  • At least three years of higher education academic leadership at the two-year college dean level or higher
  • Experience in strategic planning, resource management and the development of institutional funding priorities
  • Demonstrated record of continuous quality improvement, use of data for decision making, and establishment of metrics for evaluating initiatives
  • Experience with online learning and use of technology in the classroom
  • Experience in developing partnerships with K-12 systems, institutions offering baccalaureate degrees, and business
  • Proven record of grant development and acquisition of external funding Demonstrated record of facilitating professional development among faculty and staff
  • Higher education teaching experience
  • Experience with collective bargaining in a college environment
