The Department of Sciences and Mathematics of California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Experimental Physics beginning August 2022. We seek a collegial, dynamic educator committed to creating an environment of active student learning while engaging in scholarly activity and service in accordance with the mission and goals of the Department and University. In addition to teaching a variety of undergraduate physics courses to students in our seven degree-granting majors, the new hire will take a leadership role in the development of specialized, hands-on, immersive learning activities, and in the development of specialized equipment in collaboration with our oceanography and engineering faculty and students. Startup funds will be made available to the successful candidate. The Department is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY (Cal Maritime): Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus system. Serving a population of approximately 1100 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast.
Cal Maritime offers six baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs (GSMA), Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS: Our department is a collegial group of 18 faculty members - 11 tenured/tenure-track and 7 adjunct. The Oceanography major is housed in our Department. Additionally, we offer lower division, foundational science and math courses for all other majors offered at our University. We also offer a Mathematics minor as well as a minor in Oceanography.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Full-time (12 units per semester) teaching of a variety of
undergraduate physics courses, ocassionally teaching courses in
other physical sciences or in mathematics. During the first two
years of teaching, the teaching load is reduced to 9 units per
semester.
- Maintain an active program of research and scholarship,
especially research involving Cal Maritime undergraduate
students.
- Development of specialized learning activities and,
occasionally, of new physical science courses.
- Share in the duties of academic advising of students and other
departmental services.
- Attend departmental meetings and engage in curricular
development and assessment of learning outcomes.
- Engage in training and mentoring to improve teaching skills and
abilities.
- Take leadership in the development of specialized equipment and
of hands-on, immersive learning activities tailored to the needs of
the physics program.
- Work with our Department and School on exploring and
establishing new degree programs and/or certificates.
- Participate in activities serving the department, school,
university and community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Ph.D. in Physics.
- Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate
level.
- Ability to teach courses in physical sciences ranging from
introductory through upper level courses.
- An ongoing program of research and scholarship.
- Interest in serving the campus-at-large through committee
work.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: - Applicants with postdoctoral experience who can establish an
active research program will be given preference. As a small
campus, we are working towards building more in-house laboratory
capacity and actively support continuing collaborations as well as
the development of new collaborations with external institutions.
Additionally, our faculty are actively engaged in several research
groups supported by the CSU system.

SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: - Typical classroom and office environment are in a two-story
building with elevator access.
- Training Ship: Some classrooms (if applicable) are aboard the
training ship and requireclimbing up and down ship ladders and
gangways; lifting and carrying material from pier to training ship;
and occasional work in excess heat, cold, dampness or dry
atmospheric conditions.
