Honors Faculty Fellow
Arizona State University: Office of the University Provost Tempe: Barrett, The Honors College Location
Tempe, AZ

Description
Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University invites applications for two Honors faculty positions. Designated as Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers, Barrett faculty are Honors Faculty Fellows who enjoy competitive salaries and generous benefits. The main responsibility of Barrett faculty members involves teaching a rigorous two-semester interdisciplinary seminar, The Human Event (https://barretthonors.asu.edu/academics/honors-courses-and-contracts/signature-courses/human-event), in which students examine primary materials reflecting diverse intellectual traditions from earliest writings to the present. This discussion-based class requires students' active participation and focuses on developing their skills in critical thinking and argumentative writing. In addition, faculty are expected to formally mentor students by directing and supporting honors theses. Less formally, faculty mentor students by leading international and domestic travel programs, and by guiding them in independent study, original research and collaborative projects. We invite interested applicants to explore the many ways that Honors Faculty Fellows work with students, from directing them in creative interpretations of ancient Greek dramas, to involving them in teaching humanities courses in local correctional facilities, to exploring with them issues of immigration on the Arizona- Mexico border.

Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriching and challenging academic experience that prepares them to become leaders in their communities and better citizens of the world. Incoming Barrett students have an average unweighted GPA of 3.81 and are often in the top ten percent of their high school classes. Our student body is highly diverse, comprising 45% of students from underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities from the U.S. and internationally; and 12% first-generation, with majors across the University. Barrett operates at four ASU campuses throughout the greater Phoenix area and more recently developed a partnership with ASU Online. We anticipate that both positions will be located on the Tempe campus though faculty are expected to teach on other campuses as needed.

We seek to fill two full-time, multi-year faculty positions whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first- year Human Event seminar, with possible opportunities to teach additional upper-level honors seminars in the faculty's area of specialization. The standard teaching load is 4-4, and service to the college is 20% of the workload for this position. As a multidisciplinary faculty, we welcome applications from candidates with training in any field. Barrett values cultural and intellectual diversity and continually strives to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. We are especially interested in applicants who can strengthen the diversity of our academic community. The position begins August 2022; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.
