Position Summary

The Business and Social Sciences Data Librarian provides instruction and reference assistance for business, social sciences data, and general research topics. The Librarian provides consultation and instruction in identifying, accessing and using resources for business information as well as datasets for secondary analysis in the social sciences. The Business and Social Sciences Data Librarian develops online instructional guides and provides in-person and virtual research assistance. Occasional night and weekend work is required.

The Research and Instruction Department currently covers three in-person service points: the Main Library, the Science Library, and the Zell B. Miller Learning Center. This position is based in the Main Library, which holds a broad range of materials in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and business. The Main Library is also home to the Map & Government Information Library, the Digital Library of Georgia, and the DigiLab (a digital humanities lab). The Main Library’s Research and Instruction Department is comprised of 10 librarians and 3 student assistants.

Additional Requirements

Candidates will be considered at the rank of Librarian I, II, III, or IV.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

*Instructs library users by teaching classes and workshops in the use of business and social sciences data resources; develops LibGuides and online tutorials; and collaborates with the Business & Economics Librarian and other colleagues in joint instructional projects.

*Meets with students and faculty for in-depth research consultations using specialized business resources including market research, company and industry data and financial and investment data. Advises patrons about the availability and use of business and marketing data and coordinates individual user accounts for databases such as Refinitiv Datastream.

*Builds strong patron-centered relationships by actively cultivating interactions with faculty and students in liaison departments to keep them informed of library resources and services and to better under their research and curricular needs. Liaison departments include Terry College of Business, select departments in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, and campus entrepreneurship initiatives.

*Provides general reference service online and in person; develops knowledge of information resources and services within the Libraries, on campus, and beyond; and participates in the outreach activities of the UGA Libraries.

*Develops and maintains numeric data access in the social sciences by evaluating and updating relevant Libraries’ web pages and guides in collaboration with the Digital Humanities Lab and the Map and Government Information Library; by serving as contact person for the Libraries’ memberships in ICPSR and the Roper Center archives; and by providing consultations in the subject coverage, availability, and accessibility of datasets from these and similar sources.

Provides input in developing the collection by recommending new reference sources and evaluating databases in business and related fields.

Monitors developments and best practices in business librarianship and social science data librarianship; develops and maintains professional skills by participating in continuing education and activities such as conferences, workshops, and committee work; by conducting research or writing for publication; or by engaging in other creative and learning activities.

Participates in library-wide communication by reading, responding to, and initiating information transmitted via the Libraries’ listserv and appropriate library-wide or departmental meetings and asking questions, seeking clarification, or initiating discussion on library issues.

Serves on appropriate Libraries’ committees and maintains flexibility to assume similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.
