Job Description:

The College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP) at the University of Florida invites applications for tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor under the theme of ‘Resilient, Smart, Sustainable and Healthy Built Environments’ . The position is a nine-month appointment and is available from August 16, 2022. This position is part of a major new initiative to develop research initiatives from the College’s strength in design, construction and planning. DCP is uniquely equipped to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization, climatic and demographic changes, and tension between built and natural environments.

The successful candidate will join the core of six faculty of the Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience (FIBER) and have a tenure home in the Department of Landscape Architecture. This tenure track position will involve research, teaching and service.

Particular areas of research interest include but are not limited to:
  • Resilience of landscapes in the face of climate change, adverse weather and other hazards;
  • Systems thinking approaches that bridge the social, ecological, and infrastructural realms;
  • Community wellbeing, equity, and sustainability at the neighborhood, city, landscape and/or regional scale;
  • Landscape ecological design or planning, applied through critical professional practice;
  • GIS analysis, ecosystem modeling, artificial intelligence or machine learning processes for landscape design, planning, and conservation;
  • Landscape conservation planning, public policy guidance, recovery, risk mitigation and adaptation.
FIBER is becoming a key global player in the planning, design, construction and management of built environments and ecosystems, and is developing collaborations within DCP, with other colleges and entities at UF, and with international research institutions.

This is a pivotal and exciting moment for the profession and the Department of Landscape Architecture at UF. Established in 1933, the Department offers programs leading to a professionally-accredited Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), a College level PhD with a concentration in Landscape Architecture, and the professionally-accredited Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program (BLA), the only accredited undergraduate program in landscape architecture in the State of Florida.

The Department is housed in College of DCP, which has become one of the largest colleges of design, construction and planning in the country. The Fall 2021 enrollment of 1,800 students includes approximately 1200 undergraduates and 600 graduate students. The College employs over 170 faculty and staff members. The successful applicant will join a highly motivated faculty at a Top 5 public university according to the 2021 U.S. News and World Reports 2021 rankings. Cutting-edge research, scholarship, and teaching abound at UF, which provides ample opportunity for rich collaboration.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education, skills, and experience.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Candidates are expected to hold a terminal degree in Landscape Architecture [Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), Master of Arts in Landscape Architecture (MALA), or Master of Science in Landscape Architecture (MSLA) when combined with an accredited Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) degree or a cognate discipline];
  • Have demonstrated expertise, scholarly productivity, and clear research plan.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. and/or Licensure in Landscape Architecture is highly desirable
  • A proven track record of engagement in multidisciplinary research, critical design practice, and/or scholarship
