1. Designs and coordinates publications for the program, including brochures, newsletters, annual reports and other
marketing and promotional materials.
2. Manages the design and update of program web sites.
3. Coordinates the procurement and management of graphic design, printing and other publication-related services.
4. Writes and disseminates news and press releases for the program.
5. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with external media organizations, as well as the
university's media relations department.
6. Manages advertising, marketing and publications for promotional events and other special programs.
7. Participates in the strategic planning process related to marketing and promotion of the program.
8. Writes and edits articles, speeches, and other communication projects as assigned.
9. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Note to applicants:

The person in this position will be responsible for managing and executing the communication strategy and signature programs/events for all of the Valenti School of Communication. We are an academic unit on campus that serves ~1,700 undergraduate students and ~50 graduate students, ~60 full- and part-time faculty, and ~15 staff members. The school also hosts an established advisory council of ~15 local and regional professionals, participates in a growing Valenti Alumni Association, partners regularly with dozens of on-campus groups as well as regional community organizations on various projects, and maintains strong relationships with donors. The communication manager will be largely responsible for maintaining communication with these stakeholders, alongside the school’s director, internship coordinator, media production team, and student advisors.

The communication manager will manage outreach to stakeholders using the school’s social media sites, the school’s website, and other venues like email newsletters and on-campus promotional venues. The manager will have a budget with the possibility of hiring and overseeing student interns.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a mix of effective writing for various audiences, excellent communication skills, engaging with various groups on social media, ability to manage and produce various media, design graphics, and exhibit leadership qualities.

    • Possess the genuine curiosity and strong active listening skills needed for crafting a good story
    • Love teamwork and collaborating with students, faculty, staff, and other partners to tell better stories
    • Exhibit a self-starting mentality that allows him/her to work under minimal supervision
    • Excel at working on multiple projects and deadlines
    • Be extremely detail-oriented
    • Possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Writing capabilities:
    • Possess both creative and journalistic writing skills and experience
    • Have experience writing for and crafting digital newsletters and other e-communication products
    • Be well-versed in Associated Press writing and editing format
  • Design capabilities:
    • Possess basic-to-intermediate design skills and have a natural eye for good designs
    • Demonstrate competence with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or another graphic design software
  • Social media skills:
    • Demonstrate competence with a variety of social media channels, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, and LinkedIn
    • Understand and be able to use social media analytics software
    • Monitor video trends on social media and incorporate them, with a creative spin, in our content
  • Production management:
    • Demonstrate competence in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, or another video editing software
    • Possess classroom or professional experience in videography, non-linear editing, lighting and audio for video.
  • Strongly Preferred: Have a proven portfolio that shows he/she can create unique design ideas under strict brand guidelines
  • Strongly Preferred: Be Mac-proficient
  • Preferred: Some internship management experience
Additional job duties:
  • Manage all social media sites including Valenti’s Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and TikTok pages.
Qualifications :

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an
analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one
professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal,
directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth
specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed.

Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.

3-5 samples of work, including 1 sample of design work and 1 sample of writing work (which can include a media kit, press release, newsletter, strategic communication plan, or other campaign materials)
