The Executive Vice Dean of Academic Affairs (EVD) is directly accountable to the Dean and serves as the chief operating officer whose scope of responsibilities includes operational functions that enable the execution of the strategic plan and achievement of the School of Nursing’s (SON) goals and mission. The EVD provides innovative leadership and oversight for the quality and financial management of the academic programs and enrollment management and student affairs, and oversees the work of the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, Associate Dean for Faculty Development, Associate Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Practice, Associate Dean for Community Programs and Initiatives, Associate Dean for Global Affairs, and Academic Program Directors.

In addition, the EVD works closely with the Dean and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to support diversity and inclusion, and foster a positive and healthy work environment across the school.

The EVD is a member of the Dean’s senior leadership team and works collaboratively with fellow SON senior leadership to ensure the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the organization through shared responsibility of the development, design, and improvement of systems that will lead to the full execution of the strategic plan.

Major Responsibilities

Leadership in Academic Excellence
  • Serves as a direct liaison between the academic functions of SON and the business functions and provides strategic direction for maximizing resources and efficiency. Identifies resources required for the implementation of the strategic plan and potential obstacles that need to be addressed.
  • Provides innovative leadership and ensures the integrity of the academic programs.
  • Leads the planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of program curricula in collaboration with and the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, the Program Directors, and the faculty.
  • Leads the SON accreditation process by communicating with accrediting and licensing organizations to ensure compliance with accrediting and licensing requirements.
  • Collaborates with the Dean and Associate Dean for Finance and Administration and the Associate Dean for Practice in the development of contracts with health systems and other entities for the delivery of academic program(s).
  • Represents the SON at the university level and leads SON implementation of university-wide initiatives related to academic affairs such as those to promote greater diversity and inclusion among graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Represents the SON in the Provost’s Office for the Vice Dean Committees on academic and faculty issues.
  • Identifies and leads the response to national, regional, and local trends in nursing, health care, and nursing education to assure competitiveness in nursing education programs.
  • Determines faculty needs to support current and future academic programs in consultation with the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, the Associate Dean for Practice, Program Directors, and Dean.
  • Collaborates with Associate Dean for Faculty Development, the faculty search committee, and Dean to recruit faculty of the highest caliber to meet the strategic goals of the SON.
  • Collaborates with Associate Dean for Faculty Development to effectively and efficiently align faculty with academic programs, teaching activity, and career development.
  • Assures accountability in academic programs for effective utilization of all capital, personnel, and revenue resources for priorities and budget forecasts for the academic mission.
  • Provides leadership for the collaboration among the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, academic program directors, the Associate Dean for Faculty Development, and faculty for optimal integration across missions
  • Oversees the work of the Associate Dean for Practice on affiliations and contracts with external partners to achieve strategic goals and assures adequate staffing resources for the placement team to monitor and assure compliance with Maryland and out-of-state regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with Associate Dean for Finance and Administration on establishing and maintaining a business continuity plan to minimize interruption of instructional delivery in a disaster.
  • Collaborates with Associate Dean for Research and Associate Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs to ensure that all grants focused on the academic programs adhere to relevant regulations including human subjects protection, HIPAA, and FERPA.
  • Collaborates with Program Directors to implement orientation, development, and performance management programs for part-time faculty members.
  • Represents the SON on various SON and University committees and serves as a liaison across the university and health system, providing leadership and strategy for SON’s engagement in campus-wide initiatives.
Faculty Recruitment and Development
  • Cascades SON’s strategy/mission statement throughout the organization for maximal alignment and develops appropriate rewards/recognition and coaching/corrective practices to align personnel with SON goals.
  • Leads strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives to determine teaching needs, and provides strategic leadership for faculty development, mentoring, recruitment, and retention in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Faculty Development.
  • Collaborates with the Dean, Associate Dean for Faculty Development, and the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on the implementation and ongoing evaluation of the Diversity Action Plan to recruit and retain a diverse faculty.
  • Works with Dean and School of Nursing Human Resources Manager on preparing for faculty of retirements and faculty requests for leave.
  • Collaborates with Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning, Program Directors, Associate Dean for Faculty Development, and the Associate Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs to develop faculty abilities to work with students with diverse learning needs.
  • Oversees the orientation of part-time faculty in collaboration with the academic program directors.
  • Evaluates and advises the faculty members assigned for performance evaluation through review of the annual developmental plan, performing mid-year check-in meetings and annual evaluation relative to this plan, and the SON Appointment and Promotion Criteria.
Global and Domestic Academic Initiatives
  • Fosters strategies for external academic partnerships in collaboration with other SON leaders.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Global Affairs to optimize international opportunities for students and faculty.
  • Develops new program directors’ knowledge of Federal and university compliance requirements for international students and fellows.
  • Oversees the faculty coordinator for international student travel in collaboration with program directors in planning and executing plans for safe student international travel that meets academic accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Oversees the work of the Associate Dean for Community Initiatives to ensure that community efforts and initiatives are aligned with the SON strategic plan and mission.
Administration and Management:
  • With the aim of financial stability, assists the Dean to marshal limited resources to the most productive uses and identifies potential areas for revenue generation.
  • Drives performance measures for the operation (including a consideration of efficiency versus effectiveness), often in the form of dashboards convenient for the review of high-level key indicators.
  • Oversees the work of the Senior Academic Program Administrator who manages Academic Program Administrators in providing services to faculty and students related to academic and faculty initiatives.
  • Identifies needed infrastructure and secures resources to support academic programs.
  • Responsible for identifying the faculty and staff needs to support the academic programs and ensuring judicious use of these human resources.
  • Provides oversight for the preparation, management of resources, and execution of the budget for academic affairs and enrollment management, and student affairs.
  • Supports the Dean in the strategy and operational objectives of SON’s presence in Washington, DC.
  • Works closely with SON’s Director of Institutional Research and central JHU to complete US News and World Report submission surveys for rankings.
  • Sits on Dean’s Administrative Leadership Team and Sr. Planning Group.
  • Represents the Dean at internal and external functions as needed.
  • Oversees special projects as assigned and directed by the Dean.
  • Qualified candidates will be an RN, have a terminal degree (PhD or DNP) and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Strong record of teaching, clinical practice leadership, implementation science, and service.
  • A strong and demonstrated commitment to integrating the clinical mission in the academy.
  • A distinguished record of interprofessional collaboration and scholarship.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment as a faculty member.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
