Title Director of the Rachel Lord Center for Religious and Spiritual Life Posting Number S00911JP Department Inclusion and Diversity in Student Affairs Job Summary
Director of the Rachel Lord Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, Bowdoin College:

Bowdoin College is seeking a new Director of the Rachel Lord Center for Religious and Spiritual Life. The Center provides pastoral care to students navigating life’s biggest questions whether religious in nature or related to purpose, belonging, and meaning-making. The Director must possess the capacity and enthusiasm to work intentionally with students from a wide variety of global religious backgrounds. In addition to supporting student programming, building community on campus, and providing spiritual counsel, the Director will be responsible for delivering invocations at college-wide events such as commencement and convocation ceremonies, trustee meetings, among others. The Director’s role does not represent anyone’s religious tradition, instead works as a resource to connect students with local clergy, religious communities, and student club advisors. This position supervises the part-time College Rabbi, and functions as the main point of contact for club advisors. The Director also serves as a general resource to other campus partners and departments in regards to questions of religious accommodations and the practice of religion on campus.

As a member of the Inclusion and Diversity in Students Affairs team at the College, the Director will collaborate frequently with campus partners, most closely the Center for Multicultural Life, Student Activities, and the Sexuality, Women, and Gender Center on creative programming, workshops, education programs, and community-building events to ensure students of all backgrounds and identities feel seen, valued, and celebrated year-round. Given this, it is essential that this person demonstrates an intentional commitment to issues of social justice alongside knowledge of major religious traditions, holidays, and practices. The director serves as a confidential resource on campus and will handle private and confidential information on a regular basis. General knowledge of trauma-informed approach is a plus. Education/Skills Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree required, a Master’s degree in Divinity, Counseling or a related field preferred. Applicants must be able to work independently and as a part of a team; must be collaborative, well organized, solution-oriented, and exercise sound judgment; must possess excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; and must enjoy working with students, faculty, staff, and community-based religious leaders. Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Applicants must possess experience with interfaith education and advocacy, coalition building and/or working with multi-faith populations, and knowledge of multiple religious traditions other than his/her own.

Demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse student body in culturally competent ways, combined with a demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Standard Work Days and Hours
Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Evening and weekend work is frequently required when the College is in session.

This is an academic year, 11-month, benefits eligible position. About Bowdoin

Bowdoin College

Bowdoin (rhymes with explodin') is a private, selective, liberal arts college, founded and endowed to benefit the common good. Our historic residential campus, located in Brunswick, Maine, is home to just over 1,800 students from all over the world.

Academic life at Bowdoin spans thirty-three departments, and is cooperative, not competitive: so we tend to attract students who like brainstorming with faculty, working in teams, and welcoming big, new, difficult questions.

We value kindness, diversity, creativity, and hard work.

There’s a lot to love about Maine. And this state is very much at the heart of the College. We simply wouldn’t be Bowdoin anywhere else.

According to one of our colleagues, “To teach at Bowdoin is to help train and educate future leaders—an unalloyed privilege in my experience and a rare one.”

We feel fortunate to live here and to be able to experience everything there is to see and do. Maine is renowned for its beauty—its iconic seaside fishing villages and beachesmountain vistas, and pristine forests. But the appeal is also very much about the people—their culture, sense of community, way of life, and welcoming, inquisitive, and energized spirit.

We’re not going to try to list all that Maine has to offer. But we will try to lead you in a few directions from which you can navigate your own journey of discovery—a very Maine thing to do too!
