Job Description

Virginia Tech is seeking an outstanding leader to become the Deputy Director of the Virginia Tech National Security Institute (NSI). This is an extraordinary opportunity to join the senior leadership team of the newest thematic research institute at Virginia Tech. Reporting to the Executive Director of the NSI, the Deputy Director will have the opportunity to assist in shaping an organization that aspires to be the Nation’s preeminent academic organization for integrated applied research and development, and experiential learning to advance National Security. The successful candidate must be a compelling leader whose passion for the Institute’s research, scholarship, experiential learning, and workforce development missions will energize faculty, students, and staff to focus their efforts on a strategic vision of excellence. The Deputy Director must also be a competent and prudent steward of the Institute, guiding it through internal growth and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as through uncharted change in the sponsored research environment in the years ahead. This individual must be a respected leader who is operationally savvy and highly knowledgeable about cutting-edge research, funding opportunities, and trends and knows what it takes to sustain and build a thriving research enterprise in the field of National Security.

About the Virginia Tech National Security Institute (NSI): The NSI is the newest of three Thematic Research Institutes at Virginia Tech (the other two being the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute). Thematic institutes at Virginia Tech pursue and execute sponsored research and experiential learning programs, and they have deep relationships with sponsors, unique research facilities, and unique talent (typically a combination of research faculty and affiliated tenure-line faculty). The NSI’s mission is to perform interdisciplinary research and provide experiential learning in Blacksburg and the greater Washington DC metropolitan area to strengthen technology, standards, public policy, and the National Security Innovation Base. The objectives of the NSI includes: cultivation of a vibrant ecosystem of industry, government, and academic partners to transition research, knowledge, and talent into sustainable capabilities; and development of the next generation of leaders to strengthen the National Security workforce. It is expected that the NSI builds upon existing strengths, and broaden its reach across the unique array of academic disciplines at Virginia Tech that can contribute to all of the instruments of National Power.

Required Qualifications

• An earned doctorate, or a Masters with significant equivalent experience, in a related area.
• Military, industry, or government leadership experience.
• Bold, innovative, and visionary thought leader with expertise in a technical area of relevance.
• Must possess a distinguished reputation, with a record of recognized achievement.
• Successful track record in National Security research with a depth of experience in either an academic institution or as a renowned practitioner in the field.
• Extensive relationships with relevant federal agencies and industry partners coupled with an understanding of the spectrum of research funding. A direct understanding and keen appreciation for the academic mission of a public institution along with the importance of education, scholarship, workforce development, and shared governance is desired.
• A proven track record of supporting technology innovation, commercialization, and industry partnerships.
• Due to the nature and sensitivity of the position, applicants must be U.S. Citizens and have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the appropriate level and access.
