Position Title

Instructor - Director of Developmental Writing and Placement - Non-tenure Track

Job Description

The Missouri Western State University Department of Communication is currently accepting applications for the position of Instructor/Director of Developmental Writing and Placement. The Director will administer the day-to-day activity of ENG 100: Introduction to College Writing and the university’s developmental writing program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Provide leadership for hiring, supervising and supporting faculty
  • Responsible for curriculum development
  • Train and supervise student tutors
  • Serve on college and departmental committees
  • The Director will also be responsible for creating and administering writing placement exams and advisement for the university’s orientation programs, including the summer programs.
  • Teaching responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester in developmental writing and first-year composition.
  • Overall, the director will administer, assess and redesign the program, working with the Chair of the department to maintain quality and consistency throughout the program.
TEACHING DUTIES INCLUDE :
  • Instructors teach in discipline areas in which they have specific training and competence. The instructor is expected to plan, organize, and teach in a manner that facilitates student learning in keeping with the learning-centered values and goals of the university.
  • Teaching responsibilities include teaching three courses per semester in developmental writing and first-year composition.
  • Participation in programs that promote instructional development in the discipline; develop and manage curricular materials, ensuring that they meet departmental and university standards; participation in campus initiatives related to teaching.
  • Scholarship: applies current knowledge and innovations to important practices, and focuses on the nature and improvement of teaching.
  • Service: document students’ attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading assignments, projects, quizzes and/or examinations that lead to a final grade; plan and create lectures, in-class activities, and assignments; maintain currency in one’s area of expertise and discipline; provide academic advising and support related to the academic progress of students; is accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success; engage in service activities in support of departmental, college, and university needs; service supporting community outreach; and service to relevant professional organizations; participate in student recruitment efforts as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in English (with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition).
  • Minimum of two years of experience in writing program administration and/or working in a writing center.
  • Demonstrated experience and accomplishment in college/university teaching including teaching developmental writing and freshman composition.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the at-risk, diverse student population this program serves.
  • Must be available to Start July 1, 2022.

• Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
• Excellent teaching skills with an ability to coordinate with the faculties and students from diverse cultural backgrounds
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to multitask
• Ability to engage large groups of people with complicated material
• Able to teach with appropriate real-world experience
• Able to demonstrate confidence teaching and presenting in a public forum
• Technologically adept: can utilize electronic communications, online learning management systems, and other forms of technology related to the position
• Passionate about the field of English/Composition and education in general
• Clearly understands curriculum design, pedagogy, and learning outcomes assessment
