Primary Function
Develop and implement strategies for communicating timely information to help internal and external audiences understand and engage with the university as it relates to budgeting, technology, facilities and multi-year planning efforts.
Key responsibilities of the role include public relations and proactively planning, writing and implementing print and digital communications (announcements and informational updates, leadership messages, fact sheets, website content, newsletter articles, updates on strategic priorities etc.) for faculty, staff and students. This position is also responsible for drafting talking points, presentations and other materials at the direction of the vice president of Administration and Finance & CFO ( VPCFO ) and other members of Administration & Finance/Information Technology leadership team.
The position will report to the Director of Risk Management/Chief of Staff for the VPCFO and NIU’s Associate Vice President of Institutional Communications/Chief Communications Strategist. The role will have flexibility in regards to working remotely and on-campus.
Duties and Responsibilities (generally)
- Collaborates with other NIU communications colleagues to ensure message consistency across internal/external channels;
- Proactively keeps the Director of Risk Management/Chief of Staff, Associate Vice President of Institutional Communications, and other NIU communications colleagues, as appropriate, informed about emerging and/or ongoing organizational issues, especially those that may adversely impact NIU’s or the divisions of Administration, Finance and Information Technology’s reputations;
- Plans, develops and implements short- and long-term communications strategies that inform and educate audiences, using a range of audience-appropriate media including print, web, and other technologies;
- Produces quality content that is well written, accurate, engaging, audience-appropriate, strategically delivered, meets deadlines and conforms to NIU style guidelines;
- Ensures all proper reviews are conducted and that appropriate comments are incorporated;
- Works proactively with colleagues to anticipate issues/opportunities and associated communications
Minimum Required Qualifications for this position
1. Bachelors in English, Communications, Journalism, Business, Web/digital media, or relative field
2. Six (6) years experience in Communications and/or duties associated with the position
– OR -
Combination of education and experience per the conversion rate below:
- 60 semester hours/Associate’s Degree = 2 years
- 90 semester hours = 3 years
- 120 semester hours/Bachelor’s degree = 4 years
- Master’s degree = 5 years

Education and Experience Preferred
1. A minimum of five (5) years of relevant communications experience in higher education marketing, journalism, or related fields with increasing responsibility.
2. Relevant communications experience in higher education marketing, journalism, or related fields with increasing responsibility is required.
3. Experience with financial communications is highly desired.
4. Experience in project management and work flow analysis.
5. Experience working with and managing confidential materials.
6. Experience delivering one message across multiple platforms to various stakeholders .
7. Experience with social media and website management.
8. Experience with financial communications is highly desired.

Working Hours
8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Minimum Pay Rate (Hourly or Monthly)
$40,000-55,000 (annual)

Actual hiring rate is commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity; position includes a robust benefits package to eligible applicants.
