DIVISION: Information Technology Services
DEPARTMENT: Information Technology Services
BASIC FUNCTION: As a member of the leadership team of Information Technology Services (ITS), the CISO works collaboratively with university leadership and with department-based technical and administrative staff throughout Fairfield University. The CISO develops and leads outreach, communication, and education efforts to raise campus-wide awareness of information security risk, requirements, and solutions; provides strategic and technical guidance and assistance in the design and implementation of appropriate security processes for campus-wide information systems; additionally the CISO helps create or keep current, information security policies and incident response protocols to help ensure the confidentiality, availability and integrity of all information assets.
UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS:
EDUCATION : Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent related experience.
EXPERIENCE : At least 10 years of current experience directly related to the responsibilities of the role. Experience in higher education or a research environment is preferred. A strategic grasp of information security at both institutional and operational levels; the capacity to articulate a vision for information security that engages all constituents, satisfies internal and external requirements, and enables Fairfield University’s ongoing pursuit of excellence and innovation in its academic and research fields; and the communication and collaboration skills to build support for security-related initiatives and objectives.
CERTIFICATIONS : CISSP required, or equivalent industry certifications (ie CCNA, CCIE, MCSE, etc).

REPORTS TO: Chief Information Officer
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Establishes, implements, maintains, and modifies computer and
data security guidelines and procedures to achieve the compliance
objectives of an organization in harmony with the principles of
academic freedom that remain core to a world-class
university.
- Provides education and training programs on security policies
and practices to a range of technical and non-technical
constituents.
- Provides evaluation of security software products, oversees
their installation and implementation, and interpret findings for
practical use by law enforcement, legal counsel, and senior
management as applicable.
- Provide guidance on the information-security elements of
software and hardware acquisitions, IT services, cloud-based
solutions, mobility, and other present and emerging dimensions of
IT solutions and services in a complex environment.
- Establishes annual and long-range security and compliance
goals, defining security strategies, metrics, reporting mechanisms
and program services; and creates maturity models and a roadmap for
continual program improvements.
- Stays abreast of information security issues and regulatory
changes affecting higher education at the state and national level,
and participates in national policy and practice discussions, and
communicate to campus on a regular basis about those topics.
- Coordinates and track all information technology and security
related audits including scope of audits, colleges/units involved,
timelines, auditing agencies and outcomes. Works with auditors as
appropriate to keep audit focus in scope, maintain excellent
relationships with audit entities and provides a consistent
perspective that continually puts the institution in its best
light. Provide guidance, evaluation and advocacy on audit
responses.
- Leads the University cyber incident response team; keeps plan
up to date.
- Engages in professional development to maintain continual
growth in professional skills and knowledge essential to the
position.
- Performs other related duties as required or dictated by
responsibilities.
This position is based at Fairfield University’s Fairfield, CT campus and is not eligible for immigration assistance.
