Position Summary

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Department of Educational Studies invites qualified teacher educators with expertise in K-12 special education to apply for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank, to begin Fall 2022. The successful candidate will be a member of a diverse department that serves early childhood education, elementary/middle education, special education (K-12) and teaching English to speakers of other languages ( TESOL, K-12) programs.

We seek an educator and scholar who actively connects theory and practice in the classroom and advances the field of teacher education through a focus on innovative inclusive special education practices. Individuals should be knowledgeable of universal design for learning and be able to demonstrate their use of these and other effective inclusive practices (e.g., self-regulated learning and social and emotional learning). Preference will be given to applicants with ongoing assessment and instructional design experiences at multiple K-12 grade levels and those with evidence of successful university-level teaching and supervision and educational leadership. The ideal candidate is an exemplary educator who brings a demonstrated passion for pursuing educational equity and social justice to their work as a teacher educator. Candidates should present evidence of a research agenda related to special education or related fields. The School of Education is committed to preparing globally responsive teachers who are grounded in a strong academic curriculum that is linked to world events, geography, world cultures, and diverse perspectives.

Teaching responsibilities serve early childhood majors, elementary/middle education majors, and elementary/middle education – special education dual certification majors through courses inCollaborative Partnerships and Transitions for Students with Disabilities,Advanced Literacy and Math Practices for K-12 Students with Persistent Academic Challenges, and Designing Sustainable Inclusive Classrooms,as well as other courses, depending on the expertise of the candidate and the needs of the department.

Description of College / Department / Program / Division / Unit

The Department of Educational Studies ( DES ), housed in the School of Education, is committed to advancing teaching and learning while preparing teacher leaders for a global society. DES strives to prepare teachers who ground curriculum in the lives of students; embrace multicultural perspectives and uphold inclusive teaching practices; value academically rigorous curricula; and demonstrate culturally sensitive dispositions. DES offers teacher education majors in Early Childhood Education (birth-grade 3), Elementary/Middle Education (grades K-9), Elementary/Middle Education (grades K-9) & Special Education (grades K-12), Elementary/Middle Education (grades K-9) & TESOL (grades K-12), Elementary/Middle Education (grades K-9) & French Education (grades K-12) and Elementary/Middle Education (grades K-9) & Spanish Education (grades K-12). The dual certification majors are offered in collaboration with the Global Cultures & Languages Department in the College of Arts, Social Sciences & Humanities.

Required Qualifications

Only candidates who will have completed or are near completion of a doctorate degree by the position start date will be considered. Candidates must have an earned doctorate by May, 2023. Review of applications will begin on January 24, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in special education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field (by May 2023)
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in U.S. K-12 schools.
  • Experience designing and implementing effective inclusive and collaborative K-12 classroom environments using universal design for learning and other inclusive pedagogical approaches (e.g., self-regulated learning, social and emotional learning).
  • Experience or expertise in K12 special education
  • Evidence of an emerging research agenda
  • Evidence of commitment to social justice, educational equity, multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion as it relates to teaching, research, and/or service
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of ongoing assessment and instructional design experiences with diverse learners in inclusive settings across various developmental levels.
  • Experience with co-teaching/collaboration
  • Reading Specialist License
  • Evidence of successful university-level teaching in teacher education courses.
  • Experience with supervision of pre-service teachers in inclusive educational settings.
  • Experience supporting students with the Educator Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) or other teacher performance assessments
