Starting Salary Range : $63,629 to $97,670 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $4,018 is granted to eligible faculty.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY : This full-time, tenure track, academic specialist will enjoy a 185 - Day work schedule. The position begins on Monday, August 22, 2022 pending Governing Board ratification. Classes may be in a traditional 'in class' setting, online, or hybrid format scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and at various campus locations including days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the Department:

The Dental Hygiene Program is part of the Health, Athletics, Wellness, and Kinesiology (HAWK) Division. As a teaching institution and program, our mission is to produce clinically competent, ethical, and knowledgeable dental hygienists. Cabrillo’s Dental Hygiene program enjoys a reputation as one of Cabrillo College’s highest quality programs. Hundreds of Cabrillo graduates work in dental offices all around the Monterey Bay. The program and its graduates are highly regarded in the dental community, and the program is affiliated with the University of Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco, California.

The Dental Hygiene Department is a two-year Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program, with prerequisites in the sciences and general education. Emphasis is placed on concentrated clinical instruction integrated with basic dental hygiene sciences, community dental health, and research.

Examples of Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assist the Dean of HAWK and the Director of Allied Health with day-to-day oversight of Dental Hygiene Program faculty and classified employees
  • May participate in grant writing and other revenue generating services, and and/or the implementation of such related to the Dental Hygiene Department
  • Develop, implement. and monitor the Dental Hygiene Program budget
  • Collaborate with Dental Hygiene faculty on curriculum issues, clinical policies, teaching-learning techniques, student advising, remediation, and accreditation procedures
  • Develop and coordinate instructional schedules, services, and staffing for the Dental Hygiene Program and clinical faculty
  • Provide Dental Hygiene Program career advising In collaboration with the Counseling Division
  • Direct the purchasing and maintenance needs of the Dental Hygiene Program and clinic faculty
  • Work with local community, educational institutions, employers, and advisory committees on matters related to the Dental Hygiene Program
  • Coordinate and assist with recruitment, retention, and tracking of Dental Hygiene Program students, and determine Dental Hygiene Program prerequisites, admission criteria, and procedures as well as student promotion and retention criteria
  • Develop and implement student orientations and open houses to promote the program
  • Hire, schedule, and supervise regular staff as well as short-term and student employees for the Dental Hygiene Program and clinic facility
  • Oversee the Dental Hygiene Postgraduate Studies Department and fund-raising endeavors
  • Attend local, state and national dental hygiene meetings to stay current with the trends in dental hygiene education, teaching methodology, and technology
  • Teach assigned classes in dental hygiene as assigned, which may include evening or off-campus assignments
  • Engage in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours
  • Cooperate with and participate as required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
  • Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.
Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:
  • Master’s or higher degree AND
  • Possess an active, current dental or dental hygiene license issued by the Dental Hygiene Board of California (DHBC) or the Dental Board of California (DBC), AND
  • Documentation of two (2) years’ experience teaching in pre- or post-licensure registered dental hygiene or dental programs AND
  • Documentation of a minimum of two-thousand (2,000) hours in direct patient care as a registered dental hygienist, or working with a registered dental hygienist OR
  • The *equivalent OR
  • A lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in Health and Physical Care Services and Related Technologies
