The Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion in the Maxwell School at Syracuse University ( http://lernercenter.syr.edu/ ) invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of population health. The position is supported by the NIH /National Institute on Drug Abuse and SU’s postdoctoral scholar fund. The postdoctoral scholar will work with Dr. Shannon Monnat and other Center faculty and graduate students on research related to social, spatial, and structural determinants of physical, mental, and behavioral health. The postdoc will be responsible for supporting a recent NIDA -funded U01 project designed to examine the effects of states’ COVID -19 mitigation policies on adult psychological wellbeing, drug overdose, and suicide in the United States. At least 25% of the postdoc’s time will be reserved for their own research. This position will offer exceptional opportunities for training and collaboration within SU’s Lerner Center, Center for Policy Research, Center for Aging and Policy Studies, and Aging Studies Institute. Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD in demography, sociology, economics, public policy, or a related discipline at the start date. Preference will be given to applicants with strong quantitative skills (particularly in spatial analysis, multilevel modeling, and/or causal analysis) and with experience in data management and survey design. Candidates with interests in rural population health are especially encouraged to apply. We also seek candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their scholarship and professional activities. Job Specific Qualifications
a. PhD in demography, sociology, economics, public health, or related discipline at the starting date.
b. Quantitative research skills: requires strong background in statistical methods used in population health research, experience retrieving, preparing, and analyzing large datasets, and proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SAS, Stata, R).
c. Experience with project and data management. Responsibilities
Data management; oversee survey material development, documentation, retention, and data sharing; coordinate with graduate research assistants to complete study tasks; conduct quantitative analysis on survey, administrative, and other secondary data; contribute to dissemination of project findings (including peer-reviewed journal manuscripts, academic presentations, and public research briefs); work on publishing from the dissertation and developing new lines of inquiry; participate in research labs and other training opportunities. Postdocs are also encouraged and mentored to prepare grant applications.
The preference is for postdocs to be in residence for the duration of the appointment, but remote work is possible.
