Job Description

Reporting to the Director for Residential Well-being and in partnership with Student Affairs’ Chief Inclusion and Belonging Officer, the Managing Director for Residential Well-being and Inclusion champions a welcoming, inclusive, and holistic experience for residential students that prioritizes students’ well-being and helps them discover paths for a life of flourishing. With an innovative, flexible, and student-centered mindset, the Managing Director contributes to Virginia Tech’s bold vision to transform the traditional residential experience to one focused on well-being and the Aspirations for Student Learning, where knowing, mentoring, and supporting each student is the collective work of Student Affairs.

Working in partnership with four other Managing Directors, the Managing Director is responsible for convening a multidisciplinary team of talented colleagues from across Student Affairs to cultivate a synergistic approach to student well-being and success. This includes a Coordinator for ExperienceVT, a Coordinator for Well-being, and a Coordinator for Case Management, for whom the Managing Director provides primary supervision in partnership with colleagues in the areas of ExperienceVT, well-being, and the Dean of Students, who provide functional supervision and support. The group convened by the Managing Director also includes an embedded counselor from Cook Counseling and faculty/staff coaches from across the university. Through this convening model, the Managing Director provides leadership that leverages the full power and expertise of Student Affairs and the potential impact of the residential environment for student success. As a result, students will pursue the Aspirations for Student Learning and ExperienceVT by finding belonging, embracing their strengths, finding purpose and meaning, and creating a personalized plan for meeting their goals.

The Managing Director also champions the Principles of Community and diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the residential experience. As an advisor to the Chief Belonging and Inclusion Officer, the Managing Director identifies trends and opportunities for dialogue, intervention, and programming. In addition, the Managing Director supervises a group of student leaders for Inclusion and Belonging, whose charge is to develop relationships with their peers and provide experiences that foster an environment of acceptance and civility, where students can share who they are and connect with others from different backgrounds, identities, and perspectives.

As a Residential Well-being leader, the Managing Director engages in continuous improvement of the Residential Well-being model to facilitate ongoing systemic, community, and individual transformations for students. In addition, the Managing Director provides student support through mentoring, referral to resources, incident response, on-call duties, and other duties, as assigned.
