Position:  Assistant Professor of Communication Studies  

Salary and Terms:  Full-time, nine month* fixed-term position.  Salary placement is commensurate with education and experience

Position Description: SMSU's Assistant Professor of Communication Studies is a full-time, fixed-term faculty position. Responsibilities include delivering the COMM 110  basic public speaking course  through the SMSU College Now concurrent enrollment program at regional high schools, teaching COMM 110 regularly in an on campus and/or online context, coordinating the growing number of COMM 110 concurrent enrollment sites, assisting in the development of a delivery model for COMM 110 for those high schools whose teachers do not have the required HLC credentialing by Fall 2023, and teaching other courses in any area of specialty as needed by the Communication Studies program.

Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates for SMSU's Assistant Professor of Communication Studies position will meet the following expectations:

  • Masters in Communication Studies or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment or proven strategies for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment; demonstrated ability or proven strategies to teach and work with persons from diverse backgrounds is required.
  • Candidates must have at least two years of high school teaching and/or concurrent enrollment supervision experience, some online teaching experience and familiarity with the D2L Brightspace (or comparable) LMS.
  • Previous experience teaching a basic public speaking course and have an understanding of and appreciation for liberal education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Communication Studies or closely related field.
  • Five or more years of high school teaching experience.
  • Five or more years of concurrent enrollment supervision experience.

*Nine Month Appointments- Along with all other Universities that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, standard faculty appointments are for 168 duty days distributed over any nine consecutive months.  The nine months need not align with the traditional academic year and may be changed every two years.  Initial faculty appointments at SMSU are expected to be similar to or the same as the academic year unless otherwise indicated on the vacancy notice.
