Starting Salary Range : $60,189 to $92,390 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9. An annual doctoral stipend of $4,018 is granted to eligible faculty.

About the College : Cabrillo College is highly regarded for its success of transfer and career education, and currently serves over 11,400 students each semester. Cabrillo transfers many of its students to three nearby universities – the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, and California State University at Monterey Bay. Cabrillo's career education is closely connected to the nearby agricultural and farming industries as well as the Silicon Valley business environment.

About the Community: Santa Cruz County is situated on the northern coast of beautiful Monterey Bay. ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY : This full-time, tenure track instructor will enjoy a 175 - Day work schedule. The position begins on Monday, August 22, 2022 pending Governing Board ratification. Classes may be in a traditional 'in class' setting, online, or hybrid format scheduled over summer and/or winter months, at various campus locations including days, evenings, and/or weekends.

Full-time faculty are involved at all levels with course, curriculum, and certificate development. In addition, faculty work collaboratively to investigate and develop innovative pathways and entry points into the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program. Regular collaboration with ECE faculty and the Cabrillo College Children’s Center & Lab School faculty and staff are essential components of this position.

About the Department:

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) department is seeking a faculty member to join a creative, collaborative, community-based teaching team. The ECE Department both honors and celebrates diversity and embraces equity, anti-bias, and social justice principles. Currently, 68% of the ECE student population is Latina/o/x. The success of our outreach to underrepresented students at all college locations supports Cabrillo College’s status as a Hispanic Serving Institution and the pillars of Guided Pathways.

The ECE department offers a wide-range of curriculum including courses leading to: transfer with the Associate in Science-Transfer degree (AS-T) in ECE degree; an Associate in Science (AS) in ECE degree; as well as licensing and California Child Development permits for home-based and center-based early childhood programs. Curriculum is regularly revised and developed in response to community needs. We offer specializations in: Anti-Bias Curriculum, Children’s Literacy Curriculum, Curriculum Planning, ECE Teaching, Infant/Toddler Care, ECE Administration, Working with Culturally Diverse Families, Bilingual Spanish/English Teaching and Spanish/English Early Childhood Teaching. Additional certificates and courses are in development in response to the changing needs of our region. The ECE Department offers core courses in Spanish as part of the certificate programs in Bilingual Teaching and Spanish/English Early Childhood Teaching. ECE courses are offered at the Watsonville Center, the Aptos campus, and in distance and hybrid formats. The Cabrillo College Children’s Center & Lab School is an integral part of the department, and most courses require observation of these model early childhood classrooms (Infant, Toddler, and Preschool). The ECE department currently has two full-time faculty members.

Examples of Duties
  • Teach assigned classes, which may include evening or off-campus assignments in-person and in distance format
  • Update and develop new courses and certificates for the ECE Program
  • Participate in participatory governance committees, processes, and initiatives such as Guided Pathways, HSI Task Force, Faculty Senate, Curriculum Committee, etc.
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and academic progress
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours
  • Provide academic advising within ECE to guide students toward meeting their academic and professional goals
  • Cooperate with and participate as required in District investigations and/or student grievance matters of alleged unlawful harassment, discrimination, and retaliation
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
  • Complete required District trainings such as Title IX, Mandated Reporter, EEO/Diversity/Elimination of Bias, Workplace Safety, etc.
  • Participate in community outreach
  • Actively participate with ECE community partners/stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications

Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:
  • Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR
  • Bachelor’s in any of the above AND a Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies OR
  • The *equivalent OR
  • A lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential in Early Childhood Education

Required Professional Expertise:
  • Currency and depth of knowledge in the applicable professional field, curriculum development, review and assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Knowledge and understanding of programs such as Guided Pathways, that address commitment to equity-minded and culturally responsive teaching strategies enhancing student success
  • Work cooperatively and demonstrate sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students, administrators, faculty, and staff
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and effective use of technology
  • Evidence of professional activities and service beyond primary teaching assignments
  • Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student engagement and success in community college coursework
  • Demonstrate ability to teach courses and perform the duties effectively as described above
Required Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working directly with children under five (5) years old
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching a diverse population of adult learners, preferably community college students
Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
  • Knowledge of and commitment to developmental/constructivist, family-centered, anti-bias and social justice approaches to early childhood education including practical and theoretical understanding of curriculum development and implementation for young children
  • Experience and knowledge of Infant and Toddler program development, including PITC and RIE principles and practices
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, historically underserved and minoritized groups
  • Knowledge of critical pedagogy with a student-centered and strength-based approach
  • Bilingual and biliterate skill in (Spanish/English) at an academic level
  • Ability to teach in a bilingual format
  • Experience teaching adult learners bilingually (in Spanish), preferably community college students
  • Successful online teaching experience
