College of the Sequoias is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Criminal Justice Program beginning August 2022.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a full range of lower division courses associated with Criminal Justice, including, but not limited to: Criminal Law, Laws of Evidence, Police-Community Relations, Criminal Investigation, Criminal Identification, Criminal Justice Ethics, Criminal Justice Communication, and Patrol Procedures.

Assignments may include evening classes, weekend classes, online, and teaching at our locations in Visalia, Hanford, and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected. Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities, and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout the college.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate must meet one of the following criteria. The degree must generally be from an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or the equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in law enforcement, or
  • Associate's degree and six years of experience in law enforcement, or
  • The equivalent AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Master's degree from an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in criminal justice, criminology, or a closely related career field.
  • Three years or more of college instructional experience in criminal justice academics at the Community College level or higher, or as an instructor at a California Peace Officer Standards and Training certified police academy.
  • Five years or more of fulltime employment as a sworn law enforcement officer with a P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement agency or equivalent, and with a breadth of experience inclusive of but not limited to Patrol Operations, Narcotics, Gang Unit, Investigations, S.W.A.T., Traffic, Et al.
  • Law enforcement Supervisory, or Management experience.
  • Ability and experience to teach online
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to use computers and other instructional technologies to provide students with an engaging learning environment
  • Ability to work with non-academic campus programs, inclusive of special campus-wide committees or other activities
  • Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, including underprepared and non-traditional students.
  • A desire to assume leadership roles both within the Social Science Division, and the institution as a whole
  • Active involvement in career-related professional organizations, and evidence of continued professional development in the field of criminal justice
  • Ability to work with local criminal justice organizations to provide additional learning experiences for students in support of our established learning goals
  • Work collegially and collaboratively within the college community
  • Participation in division, program, college committees, and campus governance activities
  • Ability to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that values instructor/student interaction
  • Ability to deliver course content in a fashion that addresses multiple learning modalities
  • Evidence of the ability to use a variety of teaching strategies and assessment methods to encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population
  • Commitment to developing instructional activities, course syllabi, course outlines, and other necessary materials
  • Active and ongoing development of learning outcomes, incorporation of outcomes into criminal justice courses, and use of outcome assessments to improve student learning
