The Communication Department at Bakersfield College is seeking a faculty member for Communication Instructor for the Rising Scholars Program. History of Bakersfield College:

Bakersfield College is located in Bakersfield, California, in the heart of the Central Valley. Established in 1913, Bakersfield College is one of the nation's oldest continually operating community colleges. The college serves 33,000 students annually on the 153-acre main campus in northeast Bakersfield, at the Delano Campus (35 miles north of Bakersfield), the Weill Institute (downtown Bakersfield), and BC South-West (southwest Bakersfield). About the Communication Department, Rising Scholars Program :



Communication faculty members who work in the Rising Scholars Program (RSP), previously known as the Inmate Scholars Program (ISP), most often teach Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Persuasion, Argumentation and Debate, Intercultural Communication and Small Group Communication at five California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) prisons. Faculty are usually assigned to multiple sites to teach classes each semester. Two prison sites are in Corcoran, two sites in Delano, and one additional prison is in Wasco. Faculty commute up and down the valley to reach students currently incarcerated. It is best to think of each of the prisons as a satellite campus of BC and faculty are assigned classes at the different satellites based on students' needs. Most of our Rising Scholars are completing triple Associate Degrees for Transfer in Communication, Psychology and Sociology.

Faculty teaching assignments start after 3pm and end around 9pm depending on the scheduled start time. Unlike other traditional and non-traditional teaching assignments, faculty must be cleared by CDCR through a background check and properly trained through both CDCR and BC to be able to teach for RSP. There are rules, regulations, and codes of conduct that instructors must be conscious of and always abide by while on site and when interacting with students and CDCR staff. Although it might sound intimidating, our RSP students are some of the most dedicated, hardworking, and determined students you will ever meet. Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid credential which authorizes the full-time teaching of Communication/Language Arts at the California Community College level;

Master's in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication or organizational communication

OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in drama/ theater arts, mass communication or English

OR - The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. SALARY RANGE $ 74,314.04 - $ 137,777.44 annuallyMaximum Entry Level Salary: $ 97,508.84 annually
