Assistant Professor of History, Public History

The Department of History and Foreign Languages at Jacksonville State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of History specializing in Public History.  The successful candidate will be prepared to teach Public and Oral History and assist in the implementation of the department’s proposed Graduate Certificate in Local History.  The ability to teach Alabama history and experience with digital humanities would be a benefit, but not required.  Public and local history is a new sub-field for the department.  The appointed candidate will assist both in the design the program and community outreach.

Founded in 1883, Jacksonville State University is a learning-centered university in Jacksonville, Alabama, whose mission is to provide distinctive educational, cultural, and social experiences for a diverse student population.

Set in the Appalachian foothills of northeast Alabama, JSU is a dynamic and growing regional university that serves a varied student body. Primarily a teaching institution, JSU faculty carry a 4-4 load, and normally a 3-1 prep.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach the surveys of U. S. History each semester and one to two upper division courses at the undergraduate and graduate level according to the needs of the university and the department.  Scholarship is expected, encouraged, and supported.

Academically JSU offers 95 academic programs and concentrations, including bachelor's, master's, post-baccalaureate, doctoral and advanced certificate programs in a variety of disciplines that prepare graduates for meaningful careers and ongoing education.  More than 40 online programs are offered.  The University features seven schools on its 459-acre campus - Arts and Humanities; Business and Industry; Education; Health Professions and Wellness; Human Services and Social Sciences; Science and Library. Most academic programs have discipline-specific accreditations, a reflection of their quality and JSU’s commitment to excellence.
