To construct, prepare and operate a variety of stage sets, scenery and lighting for the production of various theatrical performances; to train students in the creation and construction of scenery for performances; and to ensure adherence to established safety procedures in both the shop and stage areas. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor.
  1. Construct, prepare and operate a variety of stage sets, scenery and lighting for the production of various theatrical performances; utilize various building materials including wood, cloth and steel; paint scenery, back drops and various other stage props.
  2. Work with faculty and students to create and construct scenery for various performances and in the safe operation of various hand and power tools including, but not limited to, saws, a drill press, welding equipment and sanders.
  3. Order, receive, store, inventory and repair tools, lighting equipment, lumber, hardware supplies, paints and other required materials for the creation of stage scenery and production of performances.
  4. Attend dress rehearsals and take notes on placement of scenery and props; gather props or scenery needed for rehearsal purposes; modify scenery as needed to comply with production specifications.
  5. Transfer scenery and props from shop area to stage for productions; set up and rig scenery; oversee the disassembly and storage of scenery and sound and lighting equipment when production is complete.
  6. Maintain the scenery shop in a safe and clean working condition; ensure adherence to applicable safety rules and regulations
  7. Maintain and update a variety of detailed records and logs of scene shop inventory and supplies, and maintenance records for compliance with OSHA rules and regulations.
  8. Provide support to stage crews during special events and performances.
  9. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge of:
  • Methods and techniques of scenery design, construction and alteration.
  • Concepts of technical theater design.
  • Characteristics of various building materials and paints.
  • Principles and applications of master carpentry.
  • Operational characteristics of various hand and power tools.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
  • Basic aspects of theatrical performances.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
  • Design, construct and alter scenery for various theatrical productions.
  • Safely operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable rules and regulations.
  • Work with students in the creation of stage scenery and props.
  • Recommend modifications to scenery and props for specific productions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships..
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs frequently; frequent bending, stooping, and climbing; use of hand and power tools; stand for long periods of time.
Education and Experience and Training Requirements
Education:
Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent with at least 18 units of college course work in technical theater applications or a related field, Associate's degree preferred.
Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in the design and construction of scenery for theatrical performances. Additional Information
