Vision Statement, California
State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is a mid-sized
comprehensive baccalaureate and masters granting university whose
staff and faculty help transform student lives through a focus on
student success and engagement through project-based learning,
service learning in its regional community, and the promotion of
multicultural and global perspectives on and beyond campus. CSUMB
is both a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and a Hispanic Serving
Institution (HSI) and has a vibrant, diverse student body of over
7,400 students.
The university’s Strategic
Plan prioritizes inclusive excellence through recruiting and
investing in the development of a diverse body of faculty, staff,
and administrators. CSUMB’s sustainability initiative is to be
carbon neutral by 2030. The university’s faculty and staff, many of
whom live in the East Campus housing development, appreciate living
and working so close to the shores of the beautiful Monterey Bay.
As one of the 23 campuses in the California State University (CSU)
system, CSUMB offers excellent benefits, including access to
below-market rate campus housing and competitive salaries for
faculty and staff.
CSUMB values an educational environment of cultural and linguistic
diversity and gender equity; ethical reflection and practice;
effective and experimental use of technologies as resources for
people and catalysts for learning; and the integration of
cross-disciplinary models enabling students, faculty and staff to
engage in innovative instruction and coordinated service
learning.
The Department of Applied Environmental Science at CSUMB invites
applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Environmental
Science at the assistant professor rank to begin in Fall 2022. We
are seeking candidates with a demonstrated commitment to teaching

dynamics. We seek a colleague who will provide leadership in the
watershed systems concentration of our undergraduate degree in
Environmental Science Technology and Policy and our master's degree
in Environmental Science by engaging in externally-funded, regional
research projects that both enrich the student experience and feed
a sustained record of publication. The ideal candidate would
capitalize on the outstanding research opportunities near CSUMB by
responding to the research needs of our community and building upon
existing regional partnerships with resource agencies, non-
profits, and consulting firms. They would also apply their research
to socially relevant environmental watershed issues such as
endangered/threatened species and/or water quality and water
supply.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Teach undergraduate courses in Introductory Geology/Hydrology (GEOL 260/260L), Geomorphic Systems (GEOL 360/360L), River Hydrology (GEOL 460/460L), and Capstone Research (ENVS 410).
- Co-teach graduate courses in Watershed Systems (ENVS 560/560L) and Professional Environmental Science (ENVS 660).
- Develop new courses in your area of expertise in response to programmatic needs.
- Employ innovative teaching and learning techniques that engage students through the use of technology, hands-on experience, and problem solving.
- Include undergraduate and master’s students in research or applied science programs.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and masters students in academics, capstone projects, theses internships, and post-degree career options.
- Play a collaborative role in integrating their science and policy-relevant scholarship into the ongoing interdisciplinary research and teaching programs of CSUMB.
- Develop professional relationships with the regional community of resource managers at local, state, and federal levels and related non-profit groups and stakeholders.
- Sustain innovative and extramurally funded research applied to environmental problems, leading to publications, professional visibility, and professionally-trained students.
- Contribute to Departmental, College, and University-wide governance through participation at faculty meetings and through committee work.
- Help implement the goals of the university embodied in the CSUMB Founding Vision Statement (https://csumb.edu/about/founding-vision-statement/).
- Engage in professional service through reviewing journal or grant submissions, organizing conference symposia, providing community lectures, working with stakeholders, etc.
