Job Summary

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) encourages applications for a full-time Linux System Administrator to join the Technical Services group. As a member of the Technical Services Group, this Professional Research Assistant - Linux System Administrator plays a key role in developing and managing information systems at NSIDC. The candidate will be a member of the system administrator team responsible for maintaining operating system configurations, monitoring tools, data center infrastructure in the Information Technology resources used by the NSIDC. In this role, the ideal candidate will support our critical computing systems and assets. You will help maintain essential IT operations, such as operating systems, security tools, applications, servers, email systems, laptops, desktops, software, and related hardware.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) is part of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder, serves as a national information and referral center in support of snow and ice research. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Monitor virtualization systems and data storage systems; proactively address or raise issues before service is impacted.
  • Apply knowledge of VMware vSphere/vSAN and related systems to maintain and enhance science data operations.
  • Install and configure new hardware components for operations in an enterprise data center environment.
  • Support performance tuning and recommend performance improvements including troubleshooting and resolving performance problems and issues.
  • Oversee the NSIDC Amazon Web Services environment.

What We Can Offer
  • CIRES can offer a generous compensation package. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $80,000 - $93,500.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer and Information Sciences, Engineering, Computer Software Engineering, Computer Engineering Technologies, or related field.
  • 6+ years relevant experience with Linux system administration.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience with enterprise virtualization, preferably VMWare.
What You Will Need
  • Experience building and administering virtualization technologies VMware, ESXi systems.
  • Experience with AWS platform configuration; deploying and managing environments, provisioning and de-provisioning AWS accounts for internal customers, proactively keep up to date on AWS services and developments.
  • Familiarity with container infrastructure technologies i.e.; Docker, Kubernetes.
  • Relevant experience managing hardware in an enterprise data center.
  • Experience with systems and network monitoring tools, i.e.; Grafana, Prometheus, Nagios, Cacti.
  • Experience providing advanced system administration for Linux, Windows, and OSX.
  • Be able to effectively communicate with staff; software developers, data management operators, user representatives, and office administrators.
  • Experience writing and maintaining code for Puppet, Ansible or similar configuration management tools.
  • Must have the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including resources, priorities, and timelines.
  • Ability to work multi-functionally in a DevOps team environment supporting a variety of users.
  • Customer service orientation toward problem solving and troubleshooting.
