Job Summary

The Instructional Support Technician III will be reporting to the Director of Resources & Operations and receiving work lead direction from the Department Chair, the Instructional Support Technician works with minimal supervision to provide administrative support and perform comprehensive instructional support services for the Physics & Astronomy department and its labs. The primary purpose of the IST is to ensure that all resources needed for classroom and laboratory instruction are provided appropriately and on time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees comprehensive support services for all sections of the Physics Laboratories
  • Serves as lead technician and provides direction to other technical staff and student assistants
  • Coordinates work schedules and provides training for technicians and student assistants
  • Maintains records and develops a calendar of supplies, materials and equipment needed for the semester
  • Tracks and maintains lab equipment and material; develops schedules for minimizing downtime of equipment, this includes working with heavy and high-tech instruments that require special expertise to set up and operate
  • Arranges for repair and overhaul of technical and scientific equipment
  • Responsible for setting up instructional materials as the request of faculty, this may include being available 24/7 for instructional periods
  • Works with faculty and students on projects and research by providing materials and equipment
  • Develops and implements laboratory policies and procedures
  • Ensures all faculty and students using teaching laboratories adhere to safety policies and procedures
  • Ensures Standard Operating Procedures and protocols are maintained and applied
  • Maintains contact with faculty and students and solicits feedback for improved services
  • Prepare purchase requisitions, confer with vendors and maintain records as required
  • Works with department analyst to manage purchases within budget and ensure policies and procedures are followed appropriately
  • Assists the chair in fiscal research and analysis, if needed
  • Serves on Department Safety Committee and advises faculty representative to College Safety Committee
  • Prepares and submits reports as requested and required
  • Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices
  • Recommends initiatives and changes to improve quality and services


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services
  • Working knowledge of, and ability to operate laboratory equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of the general methods, procedures and practices used in physics and astronomy laboratories
  • Knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum in physics and astronomy, their characteristics, and uses
  • Ability to operate and repair technical and scientific equipment
  • Ability to develop off-campus resources related to physics and astronomy for obtaining materials or equipment
  • Ability to follow university, county, state and federal policies relevant to laboratory safety
  • Excellent oral communication and customer service and public relations skills
  • Working knowledge of common software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database management and G-Suite
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU and SJSU policies and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports


Required Qualifications

Equivalent to four years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Astronomy or Equivalent 
  • Experience in TAing and/or supporting laboratory courses in Physics and/or Astronomy and/or educational background in these areas
Compensation

Classification: Instructional Support Technician
Anticipated Hiring Range: up to $6,248/month
Salary Range: $4,283/month - $7,430/month
