Harris-Stowe State University is a historically Black institution (HBCU) located in the heart of vibrant mid-town St. Louis, Missouri. Harris-Stowe’s beautiful campus is minutes from the Gateway Arch, St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art and History Museums, Forest Park and other cultural and educational institutions. Harris-Stowe’s diverse faculty and staff provide a wide range of academic programs to one of the most culturally diverse student bodies in the St. Louis region.


The Dean, College of Education serves as the senior academic and administrative official for the planning and direction for all facets of the College within Harris­Stowe State University.  The Dean will be tasked with “turnaround” the program, which would be measured by increasing enrollment, and students’ readiness performance on licensure exams as well as the quality of their practical experience.  

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and strategic vision and growth plan for the HSSU College of Education.
  • Lead the College’s accreditation process while leveraging knowledge of its policies and procedures.
  • Promoting a rigorous, research-based curriculum that incorporates innovative teaching practices.
  • Work collaboratively across the university and community to implement distinctive teacher preparation and educational studies programs.
  • Partner with faculty on program development, recruitment and retention initiatives.
  • Collaborate with University deans and the Office of the Provost sharing best practices to advance the university’s strategic academic priorities.
  • Recruiting an outstanding and diverse faculty who are actively engaged scholars and practitioners, using theory, research, and collaboration to enhance their work in a global, diverse, and technological society.
  • Ensuring that the College prepares professionals for productive roles in educational settings and community agencies.
  • Achieve the College’s strategic objectives through robust assessment practices.
  • Foster a culture of reflective, evidence-based practice and inquiry within a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintain accreditations and endorsements with regional and national organizations.
  • Provide leadership in the evaluation and professional development of, faculty, and other personnel.
  • Develop the College’s budget and providing oversight for effective resource management.
  • Exemplify and foster a transparent culture and consistent communication with faculty and staff in the College, as well as with university and community partners.
  • Advocate meaningful and innovative infusion of emerging technologies into on-campus and online instructional delivery.
  • Advance the acquisition of federal, state, and private grants/funds to support instructional innovations and support of students and faculty as well as assisting with fundraising and alumni activities.


  • A doctorate in education or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • An enterprising mindset and demonstrated experience growing an education program
  • Firm understanding relevant pedagogy and its changing dynamic toward creating professional teacher’s readiness beyond the content
  • Experience working with diverse populations and demonstrated support and enhancement of diversity in the representation of faculty and student populations.
  • Knowledge and experience in CAEP and state accreditation, and SPA.
  • Strong ability to relate to and work effectively with faculty and the University administration.
  • Commitment to developing technological innovations in all aspects of education, particularly the delivery of online coursework.
  • Desired leadership in State, Regional and National efforts to improve public education as well as providing the necessary visibility for the College and its program.
  • Achievement in securing external funding and grants.


  • Knowledge of principles and theory of teaching field as well as practices and procedures of teaching methods.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational management acuity.
  • Must have the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population. 
  • Committed to excellence while focusing on measurable results.
