Overview

California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire, 60 miles east of Los Angeles and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley. CSUSB serves approximately 20,000 students, of which 81% are first-generation college students and graduates about 5,000 students annually. As a designated Hispanic Serving Institution, CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has one of the most diverse student populations of any university in the Inland Empire, and the second highest Hispanic enrollment of all public universities in California. JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Art & Design at CSUSB is searching for a new Department Chair. This invitation is for candidates internal to the Department of Art and Design at CSUSB only. The ideal candidate will be an experienced faculty member with demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, an established record of scholarly research and evidence of commitment to student success. The Department Chair will serve in a leadership capacity in support of the College of Arts & Letters' mission and institutional values. They will provide academic and administrative leadership and facilitate the orderly conduct of the affairs of the Department and the College. The responsibilities, to varying degrees, include, but are not limited to, the following:

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The successful candidate will provide responsible and professional leadership in managing the day-to-day operational needs of the department, including supervision of support staff, scheduling courses, evaluating and mentoring faculty, fiscal management and allocating facilities and equipment for teaching, research and service activities. The Chair will also represent the Department and College with on and off-campus constituencies and maintain positive public relations with these groups. In addition, the Chair is encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the university's strategic plan. This plan emphasizes: a) student success; b) faculty and staff success; c) stewarding resources; d) community engagement and partnerships; and, e) enhancing the campus identity.

Minimum Qualifications
A terminal degree in studio art, design, art history, or visual studies or related field by time of appointment. Applicants must hold a rank of Associate or full Professor. Area of specialization in fields pertinent to art and design is open.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Degree in hand by time of appointment. (Appropriate graduate degree in a field related to art, design, art history, or visual studies)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level is preferred and should be noted in application.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with CSUSB. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Art & Design is located in the College of Arts & Letters and offers undergraduate degrees in Art History, Design, and Art, and an MFA in Studio Art. In any given year that department has approx. 500-600 students in its majors, and between 15-20 graduate students. The department is housed in the Visual Arts Building, 100,000 sq. ft. of workshops, studios, classrooms, gallery space, and offices which boasts professional level equipment for art and design teaching and creative activities.
