Assistant Professor of Disease Ecology

Assistant Professor of Disease Ecology

The Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Disease Ecology. This is a tenure-line position with a 75% research and 25% teaching appointment. The hire will be co-funded by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences and the Huck Institute's Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics. The tenure home will be in the College's Department of Ecosystem Science and Management. The position comes with a competitive start-up package and salary based on 36-weeks of service annually, which can be supplemented with additional salary up to a total of 48 weeks from external competitive grants and contracts and/or from endowment funds.

The successful candidate will have an active research program focused on the conservation and management of fish or wildlife species that are threatened by disease and/or the control of zoonotic pathogens that infect humans, fishes, or wildlife. While any aspect of disease ecology will be considered, some areas of particular interest include fisheries diseases in aquaculture and stocked populations, wildlife reservoirs of Covid or other emerging viruses, diseases contributing to population declines in bats and other wildlife pollinators, managing fish or wildlife pathogen infection, and managing transmission under climate change scenarios. Teaching responsibilities will include one undergraduate and one graduate course per year.

This hire is part of departmental effort to enhance expertise in the management of invasive species, soil and water-borne pathogens, and wildlife/fish diseases and develop methods to mitigate their impacts on society. Co-hire with the Huck Institute's Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics gives the successful candidate an opportunity to interact with one of the foremost disease ecology programs in the world.
