Job Description:

The College of Saint Rose invites applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor of Broadcast News and Mobile Journalism in the Department of Communications in the School of Arts and Humanities, beginning August 15, 2022. This is a full time, tenure track position.

Drawing from a long, robust learning tradition, the School of Arts & Humanities is a dynamic community of experienced and creative artists, musicians, writers, and researchers who prepare graduates to think critically, communicate effectively, and address the needs of our increasingly complex society.

To augment our dedicated Communications full-time faculty, we seek highly qualified faculty to teach day, evening, and /or weekend courses in-person, blended, and online as the curriculum demands. Our faculty are expected to integrate the impact of digital and technological innovations into the broadcast news and journalism curriculum.

Additionally, the applicant would teach 12-credits (3 or 4 courses) per semester each academic year. Anticipated courses in our new Broadcast News and Mobile Journalism concentration include introductory and advanced mobile journalism courses, media writing, broadcast news and copyrighting, newsroom (newspaper or studio-based), and topics courses related to this area of concentration and the applicant's expertise.

Currently, program responsibilities include teaching 12 credits (3 to 4 courses) per semester of undergraduate courses in Communications from among the following courses:

COM 221: Journalism 1
COM 225: Interviewing
COM 313: Broadcast News
COM 314: Broadcast Copywriting
COM 331: Journalism 2
COM 420: TV Journalism
COM 470: Newsroom
COM 480: Advanced Journalism Topics

Additional responsibilities include contributing to the continuing development and refinement of the Communications program, engaging in scholarship, attending and/or organizing internal and external events applicable to the College and the candidate's academic discipline, providing academic advising, leading the Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ) Student Chapter, engaging in program assessment and curriculum development, and participating in Department, School, and College committees.


The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) from an accredited institution in Broadcast Journalism, Journalism, Broadcast News, or a closely related academic field, at the start date on August 15,2022.

An ABD from an accredited institution, US based or foreign, in Broadcast Journalism, Journalism, Broadcast News, or a closely related academic field, will be considered if the degree will be completed within 1 year from start date.

Additional requirements include: Two years of professional experience in broadcast journalism, news, or journalism; four semesters of college level teaching experience as instructor of record; a demonstrated commitment to and record of excellence in teaching; a record of scholarly work, including conference presentations; demonstrated knowledge of how digital and technological innovations impact the broadcast news and journalism, strong written and oral communication skills; and, if selected to advance, a successful demonstration of teaching ability and scholarship during the on-campus interview.
