The George Washington University

Washington, D.C.

THE SEARCH

The George Washington University (GW), a preeminent urban, private institution located in Washington, D.C. with a commitment to creating a greater world, seeks an Associate Vice Provost for University Career Services (AVP). The next AVP will serve as a key leader in setting the direction of career education at GW and providing strategic leadership at an institution that has made career planning and student success an institutional priority. This is a pivotal moment for a visionary leader to drive innovation strategically and holistically, and to further strengthen GW’s commitment to preparing every GW student to build a lifetime of opportunity and realize their full potential.

Reporting to the Vice Provost of Enrollment and Student Success (ESS), the AVP plays a pivotal role in the strategic direction of ESS and is one of the senior leaders in the division. As the chief executive of University Career Services, the AVP provides leadership, vision, planning, and management to advance students’ career readiness and connect students with top-tier employers and professional opportunities for meaningful career development and post-graduate success. University leadership envision this office to be the national model for Career Services, providing an experience unique to GW students and alumni. GW’s prime location in Washington, D.C., just four blocks from the White House, offers students incredible connections and internship opportunities in the federal government, major government, and non-governmental agencies, as well as private, national, international, and non-profit organizations and companies.

The ideal candidate will be a committed and experienced professional who has thrived in complex, highly demanding, fast-paced environments of excellence with the ability to lead in a dynamic and rapidly changing leadership setting. They will have experience in career services and/or bring a deep knowledge of industry standards and best practices, trends, and challenges in the field as relevant to both undergraduate and graduate students, and be culturally intelligent with demonstrated experience in diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and anti-racism. The AVP should bring a record of successful leadership, consensus-building, and an ability to build sustaining and effective relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, university leadership, and employers, and should advance the close relationships with campus partners and career services offices across academic units.
