Position Description Summary

The Medical Laboratory Sciences ( MLS ) Program at Northern Illinois University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2022. The department seeks candidates committed to undergraduate teaching excellence at a Doctoral/Research extensive university with a diverse student body located 60 miles west of Chicago. The Medical Laboratory Sciences Program is housed in the School of Health Studies, in the College of Health and Human Sciences, and is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science ( NAACLS ). The BS in MLS program is a limited admission program in the college to assure practicum placement in an affiliated hospital. There is also an option for MLT to MLS for those students meeting the MLS program admission requirements.

Position Summary

The Assistant Professor of the NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Sciences Program will engage undergraduate students through lecture and student laboratory experiences in microbiology (including parasitology and mycology) and molecular diagnostics. This position offers opportunities for professional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching didactic and laboratory courses for the program. Emphasis on microbiology including parasitology and mycology, molecular diagnostics, and other introductory courses as needed.
  • Mentoring and advising students.
  • Support the college MS and/or PhD in Health Sciences through student engagement or other activities
  • Actively develop or continue a research agenda and seek internal and/or external funding.
  • Participate in research, university, and professional service.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD, EdD. or DCLS . Applicants who are currently ABD must have completed their doctorate by time of appointment and have an established record of teaching and research agenda.
  • Current MLS, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology specialist certification through ASCP .
  • The desired candidate will demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills with a record of professional service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional clinical laboratory work experience and didactic and/or clinical teaching experience in higher education within the last 3-5 years.
  • Proven ability to develop and conduct research, publish results, and mentor students will be given preference.
