Core Fellow/ Visiting Assist. Prof. in Marine & Coastal Mgmt., Coastal Urban Planning, Climate

The Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences at Boston College invites applications for the position of

Core Fellow/ Visiting Assistant Professor in Marine & Coastal Management, Coastal Urban Planning, Climate Adaptation, or Environmental Engineering. The appointment for this one-year postdoctoral visiting assistant professorship will be for the 2022-2023 academic year. Salary is competitive, and the position is renewable upon favorable review for up to three years. Boston College requires all students to complete a liberal arts Core Curriculum with 15 requirements as the foundation of their undergraduate education. Core Fellows teach signature courses in the Core. Developed for first-year students, interdisciplinary Complex Problem and Enduring Question courses are part of an ongoing renewal of the University Core Curriculum. In one semester, the Core Fellow will help design and teach hands-on, project-based lab sections associated with the Complex Problem course, “Understanding & Protecting Our Oceans in the Wake of Climate Change,” co-taught by faculty from the Biology Department and the Environmental Studies Program. In the other semester, the Core Fellow will teach an Enduring Question course paired with a second course, also designed by another Core Fellow.

Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Marine & Coastal Management, Coastal Urban Planning, Climate Adaptation, and Environmental Engineering) should be conferred between August 1, 2019 and August 1, 2022. Comfortability with teaching both social science-based labs and problem-based STEM labs is preferred but not required.

The teaching statement should address: (1) how the applicant’s area of expertise and approach to education may contribute to an interdisciplinary Complex Problem course on the biology and management of oceans amid a changing climate by designing labs in innovative and imaginative ways; (2) how the applicant’s approach to teaching can link interdisciplinary academic knowledge to the formative education of students as whole persons and active citizens; and (3) potential topics for an Enduring Questions course paired with another course taught by a scholar in the Social Sciences.
