The Department of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University is in search of a dynamic board-certified general surgeon to join the Division of Acute Care Surgery as a contributing member at Howard County General Hospital. As a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, Howard County General Hospital, located in Columbia, MD, is a 266-bed acute care facility that has been servicing the community for nearly 40 years. This position is broadly structured with the anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.

The selected candidate will serve as a general surgeon, holding an appointment with the Division of Acute Care Surgery and will report to the division chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, Dr. Kent Stevens, as well as other senior leaders of The Johns Hopkins University. The individual will have the opportunity to develop an elective general surgery practice, as well as practice acute care surgery while taking call at Howard County General Hospital.

The ideal candidate must have broad experience in adult general surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic skill sets, and demonstrate a commitment to patient care and enthusiasm for creating an inclusive learning and working environment. Examples of Work Performed: The candidate will provide medical services in both the inpatient and outpatient environments. Clinical responsibilities include actively participating in continued growth of the acute care programs at the JHU SOM in the Baltimore/Washington area. Teaching responsibilities include participating in the education of surgery residents and medical students. Research responsibilities include actively pursuing and participating in research activities as well as mentoring residents and other faculty in research endeavors. Will be required to take trauma call at Howard County General Hospital.

MD, DO, or equivalent degree from an accredited school of medicine is required.

Candidates must be board certified by the American Board of Surgery and eligible for licensure in Maryland.

Physician must meet all qualifications to participate in Johns Hopkins programs for professional malpractice and other liability coverage.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
