Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Marketing and Strategic Communications, the Marketing and Communications Specialist will support the marketing needs of University Communications, focusing on overall University brand positioning and strategic messaging, and other University communications priorities as needed.

The position will assist in the development and execution of several comprehensive marketing and communications campaigns, including the award-winning Made at Sac State campaign, aimed at external audiences to increase positive awareness of Sacramento State among local audiences. The Marketing and Communications Specialist will work collaboratively with University Communications directors, writers, graphic designers, and photographers/videographers to develop a variety of compelling and impactful promotions and communications, both in print and online. Helping establish messages and creative direction, writing copy, managing logistics, and meeting deadlines are fundamental elements of this position.

Responsibilities also include development and maintenance of various collateral, signature publications and web pages, regular reporting, archiving, and facilitation of key community sponsorships.

FLSA: Exempt

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,515.00 - $6,358.00 per month

Hiring Range: $3,515.00 - $5,383.00 per month

Pay Plan: 12 month

Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ability to work some evenings and/or weekends, occasionally at off-site locations, as needed/limited basis.

Department Information

The Office of University Communications works to raise awareness and tell the Sac State story on campus, in the region, and beyond. In support of the University's strategic priorities, we partner with campus colleagues to showcase academic success, inclusive excellence, and robust community engagement via a wide range of communication platforms. We oversee news and media relations, crisis communications, social media and multimedia, marketing and branding, and strategic publications.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Required Qualifications

1. Demonstrated ability to synthesize data and information to develop key messages and clear and actionable strategic communication plans.

2. Possess advanced writing and editing/proofreading skills to quickly produce clear, effective and accurate copy supporting the University.

3. Demonstrated knowledge of graphic design, photography, and video creation in support of communications goals.

4. Ability to provide lead work direction to, as well as work in collaboration with, creative teams (including graphic designers, photographers, videographers) to facilitate the progression of projects from concept and copy to on-time completion.

5. Solid understanding of news media, social media and other digital communications platforms, including effective content development, delivery and reporting.

6. Ability to incorporate exceptional news, social and digital strategies into overall promotions and communications goals.

7. Ability to identify and effectively apply University brand, tone, and style in communications and align with established strategic messages, as well as be an advocate for brand integrity among internal audiences.

8. Possess strong organizational and project management skills, including prioritizing and handling multiple projects and deadlines.

9. Ability to collect research, examples, and present summaries, metrics and other data to showcase department successes.

10. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with culturally diverse internal and external groups to consult, gather information, solicit and incorporate feedback, present solutions, gain consensus, and manage approvals.

11. Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to advertising and promotions.

12. Working knowledge of applicable software packages, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite.

Preferred Qualifications:

14. Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field.

15. 3-5 years or more of experience with progressive responsibility working in a marketing, communications, or public relations corporate setting.

16. Experience working within a higher education environment

17. Familiarity with using web-based project management software, such as WorkFront, Microsoft Teams, or others.
