This position may include a combination of day, evening, weekend and extension site assignments. Assignments may be online, face-to-face, virtual or may combine these modalities. Southwestern Community College District (SCCD) is seeking a full-time, tenure track, equity-focused faculty member committed to serving its' culturally diverse student population. THE COLLEGESouthwestern Community College District is a single college district providing higher education in Chula Vista, San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, National City and Coronado. SCCD's strategic south San Diego County locations position the College to provide exceptional service to a binational community on the U.S.-Mexico International Border. SCCD is one of 20 initial California Guided Pathways colleges and is known for its excellent learning communities. Southwestern Community College District seeks faculty who value mentorship and working in a collegial, collaborative environment, guided by a commitment to helping all students achieve their educational goals. RESPONSIBILITIES:The successful candidate will join the School of Business and Technology, Business Management/Business Administration team dedicated to specifically teach Economics. The Accounting and Business Department offers our diverse students technical and professional training for careers in a wide variety of business-related disciplines. The Department has many programs that lead to certificates, A.A. and AS degrees, and preparation for transfer to a four-year college or university. The primary teaching responsibility will be in the subject Economics. Under the direction of the Dean, the School of Business and Technology is soliciting diverse applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Economics. This position requires a candidate with strong competencies in Economics with primary teaching responsibility in Economics. A candidate background that includes work experience in the field of for-profit, non-profit or governmental Business and/or Accounting is also desirable so as to provide context for our Business students. The majority of students taking Economics courses at Southwestern College are Business and Accounting majors.

Knowledge and Abilities:
1. Subject matter preparation: a) Experience in teaching face-to-face, online, virtual and hybrid Economics courses.b) Obtain SCCD Distance Education Faculty Training (DEFT) certification, or the equivalent, within four months of hire date. c) Work experience in the area of Economics, Business Administration, or Business Management.d) Teaching experience to include at least three years of community college or above; either part-time or fulltime.e) Ability to assume a lead role in the development, realignment, redevelopment and implementation of courses and programs in the discipline of Economics as needed. Required work includes developing curriculum, both working at times independently as well as in cooperation with other faculty. Curriculum work includes inputting information and data in specific formatting within computer systems and apps as determined by the Southwestern College Curriculum Committee, as well as speaking before the Curriculum Committee when relevant curriculum modifications and additions are on the agenda of said Committee. This includes leadership and implementation regarding policies regarding distance education, virtual, hybrid and in-person courses. f) Ability to provide respectful, warm and inclusive leadership for the discipline of economics.g) Ability to head up and completing program review, student learning outcomes, and grant applications, h) Ability to interface effectively with other departments and disciplines.i) The ability to connect with and guide Economics, Accounting and Business Administration students and to provide them with positive, respectful, warm and welcoming support and guidance inside and outside the classroom.j) Ability to participate in the development of industry and government partnerships, university center development, enhancement of workforce development, work-based learning, career pathways, and play an active role in outreach to and speaking at to K-12 schools.k) In addition to teaching competence in the primary discipline, the successful candidate will also have experience in blending student success strategies, such as goal setting, time-management, problem solving, study methods, and research skills. Candidates who have not had such experience will be expected to gain these competencies during their first year, so that they are able to incorporate these strategies in their own courses.
2. Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher a) Understanding of the role and purpose of the community college.b) Ability to evaluate one’s andragogy and its effectiveness in facilitating student learning.c) Ability to use teaching methods that engage racially, ethnically, academically, and culturally diverse students; promote critical thinking and emphasize cooperation and collaboration.d) Sensitivity to, and respect for a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. e) Commitment to collegiality and collaboration by working as a team with faculty and staff enhancing instruction, curriculum, and student success; as well as in the planning of class schedules and teaching rotations.f) Knowledge and practice of culturally responsive pedagogy and andragogy that supports student-centered, self-reflective, and student-capable approaches which includes a wide range of institutional delivery systems.g) Ability to teach online, face-to-face, virtual, and hybrid courses effectively and to create engaging, motivating and highly organized in-person courses.h) Commitment to professional responsibilities and associations outside of the classroomi) Strong Commitment to contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the department and division and engage in departmental and division activities.

Minimum Qualifications: (Faculty and Academic Administrator Positions Only)
Master’s in economics
OR
Bachelor’s in economics AND Master’s in business, business administration, business management, business education, finance or political science
OR
the equivalent
OR
a valid California Community College Instructor Credential in Economics.

Desirable Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following desired qualifications:

  3. Experience and ability to address equity gaps within the discipline in the classroom.

  6. Significant work experience in the field of Economics, Accounting, or Business.
  7. Demonstrated track record nurturing students inside and outside the classroom.
  8. Demonstrated track record placing group goals and unity above personal aspirations.
  9. Competence with and strong interest in working with data to succinctly and competently write reports for inside and outside institutions and grant applications.
  10. Interest and ability to reach out to employers in the community.
  11. Industry contacts within Economics, Accounting or Business within for-profit, non-profit, and/or governmental entities.
  12. Demonstrated interest in working in a team of colleagues towards common goals over individual goals.
  13. Excellence in succinctly writing with fluidity for the purposes of discipline reports, grant applications, and outreach & marketing.
  14. Ability and interest in placing one’s mandatory and optional role as a full-time faculty member at of the School of Business, within the Department of Accounting & Business, above self-employment or work for other employers.
  15. Ability and interest in teaching and in running the Economics program above institutional leadership or administrative aspirations.
  16. Ability and interest in reaching out to potential and current students.

Salary
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education.  Initial salary placement for experience can range from $52,820.00-$79,477.00 per year.  Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.  For the current salary schedule and information on salary placement visit our website at www.swccd.edu.  Benefits include a choice of medical plans, dental coverage, vision, sick leave, and an optional tax deferred flexible benefit plan.  Coverage is offered for employees and all eligible dependents.   Academic employees participate in the State Teachers’ Retirement System, a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California.
