Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Chancellor serves as the administrative and executive head of the institution. The Chancellor will work effectively with the UNCW Board of Trustees, the President of the University of North Carolina System, the UNC Board of Governors, members of the North Carolina General Assembly, the Governor and Executive Branch leaders, North Carolina’s Congressional delegation, student, faculty and staff, and other government, community and industry representatives. The Chancellor will value the unique interaction of teaching, research and community engagement that exists at UNCW . The leader selected for this role will build on the considerable strengths developed at the institution during is first 75 years, guiding a university like no other to new levels of success. The Chancellor will demonstrate knowledge of board governance and relations in a complex institutional setting, commitment to public education, and an understanding of the role of UNCW in the community, region, state, nation and the world.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • An earned terminal degree or equivalent leadership experience
  • High regard for outstanding scholarship and high-quality teaching, as well as the ability to navigate the transformation associated with being elevated to an R2 institution
  • A high degree of personal and professional integrity paired with an authentic leadership style
  • Broad leadership and executive experience including holding leadership roles in a higher education setting
  • An understanding of change management and strategic planning expertise
  • The ability to work closely and coordinate with the UNC System President, the UNC Board of Governors, the UNCW Board of Trustees, and the legislature to promote the mission of the university
  • Strong financial management skills and understanding of complex budget models
  • An understanding of high-level management of large numbers of diverse personnel
  • A record of individual action and institutional leadership to advance diversity, equity and inclusion towards inclusive excellence
  • A commitment to student success including enrollment, retention, and graduation, as well as programming to support a diverse student body
  • A proven track record for engaging community partners and building strategic partnerships
  • Demonstrated success cultivating relationships with various stakeholders in the public and private sector and comprehensive fundraising efforts (donor, foundations and corporations)
  • An understanding of the culture, processes and policies associated with a public institution within a public university system
  • A commitment to environmental sustainability, coastal resiliency and support a goal of carbon neutrality
  • A commitment to enhancing the positive role of athletics in support of the university, its students, alumni and local community
  • Ability to recruit, attract and retain diverse faculty, staff and students
  • Focus and promotion of academic excellence inclusive of innovative programming (e.g., STEM )

Under the leadership of the Chancellor the UNCW campus demonstrates our commitment to attracting the best students, faculty and staff to UNCW by supporting the university’s success in teaching, research and service. As one of the 17 constituent institutions that are part of the UNC System, the Chancellor is the top administrator for the UNCW campus and is responsible for strategic and operational planning and oversight.

UNCW is focused on diversity, equity and inclusion; globalization; ethics and integrity; and excellence and innovation. The university continues to implement its Strategic Plan; has set records for annual enrollment, graduation and philanthropic giving; increased community, military and international partnerships; enhanced online educational offerings; and added several new academic programs. The university also secured its highest gift in university history and supported the launch of the first satellite sent into space by a UNC System institution. The university has experienced significant challenges of late, including the global COVID -19 pandemic and Hurricanes Florence and Dorian. The university recently completed $400 million in planned and storm-related campus improvements, including renovation of Dobo Hall and construction of Veterans Hall, new student housing and other academic and administrative support facilities.

UNCW consistently earns recognition in national rankings and was recently elevated to the classification of “Doctoral Universities: High Research Activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
